Premier League Best Eleven Of The Week: Week 1

Goalkeeper

Tony Warner (Fulham): A last-minute replacement for Antti Niemi, who was injured during the warm-up, Warner produced an outstanding performance. Having seen opposite number Jens Lehmann commit a first-minute howler for the Fulham goal, Warner produced a string of fine saves to keep Arsenal out until the closing minutes. He made excellemt stops from two Rosicky shots, and denied both Hleb and Rosicky in one-on-ones.

Defenders

Nicky Shorey (Reading): Shorey was one of the Reading defenders asked to do a job that most footballers dislike: man-marking. His target was the quicksilver Cristiano Ronaldo and he stick to his man doggedly, performing a role that was crucial to his manager's tactical gameplan. The Royals' defence was disciplined and organised, and Shorey was quietly effective throughout.

Paul McShane (Sunderland): Along with team-mate Nyron Nosworthy, McShane nullified what has been hyped as the most vaunted strike-force in the Premier League. The one-time Manchester United youngster, who joined the Black Cats this summer from West Brom for £1.5million, handled Dimitar Berbatov superbly and scarcely put a foot wrong. The fact that the largely anonymous Berbatov was withdrawn underlined McShane's effectiveness.

Jamie Carragher (Liverpool): The commitment and all-round strength of Carragher's play explains why England boss Steve McClaren is trying to persuade him to continue with England - while begging the question: why had he been allowed to slip so far down the pecking order that international retirement seemed a sensible option? Carragher excelled against Aston Villa, leading by example at the back, though it was ironic that his handball gave Villa the penalty from which they scored.

Ross Wallace (Sunderland): In the Premiership newcomers' solid rearguard display, Wallace carried out his defensive duties effectively against Spurs, and overlaid that with an attacking contribution that got its reward at the death as, with another of his marauding runs, he created he space to cut the ball back for Michael Chopra to score the game's only goal.

Midfielders

Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea): The drawn-out saga of Arjen Robben's proposed transfer to Real Madrid may be the making of Wright-Philips' Chelsea career. He was a revelation against Birmingham, direct and incisive down the right-wing, and his crosses were a danger to Brum all afternoon.

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool): The Reds' skipper was outstanding in the middle of the park against Aston Villa. Dictating the pattern of play, breaking forward purposefully whenever he could, spraying passes, Gerrard capped his display by curling in a perfect free-kick that gave Liverpool all three points.

Elano (Manchester City): Several of Sven-Goran Eriksson's new signings impresed at West Ham on Saturday, none more so than the Brazilian, Elano, whose introduction to English football was superb. Newly arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk after a summer playing in the Copa America. Elano oozed class. Playing just behind lone striker Bianchi, Elano's intelligent runs created space which he always threatened to use to telling effect. His run, dribble and low cross to Rolando Bianchi for City's openimg goal was exceptional.

Olivier Kapo (Birmingham City): Another player making his Premiership bow, the France international, born in the Ivory Coast, who joined Birmingham for £3 million from Juventus, source of danger to Chelsea wth his loping runs. At 2-1 he drifted in from the left, brushed aside Glen Johnson and let fly with an unstoppable left-footed shot across Petr Cech and into the top corner.

Strikers

Obafemi Martins (Newcastle United): In a team performance of high promise for the Magpies, Martins led the line superbly and scored twice - the first a real gem of improvisation and technical execution. Collecting and controlling the ball on his chest, the Nigerian fired it into the net with an acrobatic overhead kick. He added his second when bearing down on the Bolton goal at pace and unleashing a shot that took a kind deflection to wrong-foot Jaaskelainen.

Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn Rovers): Santa Cruz made a dramatic impact on his introduction to the Premier League, which effectively turned the game against Middlesbrough in Rovers' favour. Sent on by Mark Hughes after Benni McCarthy's alarming head injury, with Boro leading 1-0, the Paraguayan striker, described by his own captain Ryan Nelsen as "too bloody good," connected with David Bentley's cross to score with a towering header. It was only his third touch, but Sant Cruz showed in the half-hour he was on the pitch that his signing from Bayern Munich could have been a masterstroke.

Goalkeeper

Craig Gordon (Sunderland): The young Scot was always going to have plenty to do against a strong Liverpool attack and stood up to the test admirably. The £7million-plus price-tag still hangs around his neck, but a commanding performance, only tarnished by two unstoppable strikes, went some way to justify it. Without him Sunderland could have lost by five or six.

Defenders

Ashley Cole (Chelsea): Having struggled with injury in his first season at Stamford Bridge, Cole is beginning to produce the kind of form at Chelsea that made him one of the hottest properties in football two years ago. As well as tirelessly surging forward, Cole also showed that he has improved his tackling, with several solid interceptions against Pompey.

Richard Dunne (Manchester City): His partner in crime, Micah Richards, might be getting all the plaudits at the moment, but for the second week in a row, Dunne showed why he is a favourite amongst City fans. Barely put a foot wrong and anchored the defence well enough to shut out a potent Arsenal side for 80 minutes.

Sol Campbell (Portsmouth): Dead and buried when he stormed out of Arsenal, Campbell has been given the kiss of life at Fratton Park. He made an astounding saving tackle to deny Drogba doubling Chelsea’s lead, as well as looking positionally aware, strong in the air and doing his England chances no harm at all.

Pascal Chimbonda (Tottenham): In a strange game at Old Trafford, full-back Chimbonda was one of the star performers. He managed to keep tabs of Paul Scoles, Nani and Ryan Giggs throughout the match, looking unbeatable in the air and infallible in possession.

Midfielders

Ashley Young (Aston Villa): His pace is well known and was one of the reasons Martin O’Neill forked out £8million for him in January. Young always looked a threat running at defenders down the left and was perhaps the difference between Villa and Fulham, scoring once and setting up another in a 2-1 win.

Momo Sissoko (Liverpool): Steven Gerrard’s are perhaps the biggest boots to fill in the Premiership, but with the skipper out injured it fell to Sissoko to do so, and he did it well, getting on the scoresheet in typical Gerrard fashion. Not only did he chip in with a goal, he did the leg-work to support the front two.

Sulley Muntari (Portsmouth): The Ghanaian midfielder arrived in the Premiership as an unknown force but is quickly making a name for himself. Returning to the Pompey set-up after a one-match ban, Muntari bossed the midfield in the second half against Chelsea, mixing tough-tackling and precise passing to ensure his place in the best eleven this week.

Aliaksandre Hleb (Arsenal): The Belarusian is coming into his own this season. Against City, the crowd rose when the ball was at his feet, such was his impact in the game. Dribbling is his strongest asset and he flaunted it unashamedly throughout the match, and unusually for Hleb, his distribution was also top notch.

Strikers

Nicolas Anelka (Bolton Wanderers): The Frenchman was pivotal in Bolton’s first win of the season, scoring one and setting up the third against Reading. Perhaps he was playing for his ticket out of the Reebok Stadium, or showing the passion he has for the team, but regardless of his motivation Anelka showed that he is still one of the best in the business.

Cameron Jerome (Birmingham City): The young striker scored the fastest goal of the season so far, netting after just 32 seconds against another below-par Derby side. He got his second of the match after an hour, but looked good for another couple. He has shown great potential so far and could be one of the surprise packages of the season if he keeps his composure.

***************************

setanta sports'dan

Goalkeeper: Craig Gordon - Sunderland

The Scottish custodian was given plenty of work to do by a Liverpool attack that more than overwhelmed the Black Cats' defence. Despite twice conceding, it is not unfair to say that Gordon's efforts, which produced several superb saves, kept the score respectable for Roy Keane's side.

Right Back: Michael Essien - Chelsea

Once again played out of position, the former Lyon powerhouse showed his versatility with another uncompromising display to help an unconvincing Blues side keep out a Pompey attack that threatened to cause an upset. The introduction of new boy Juliano Belletti in the latter stages allowed the Ghanaian to take up a more familiar role - and almost led to a Pompey equaliser.

Centre Back: Richard Dunne - Manchester City

As City's defence continues to hold up strong against all challengers, Sven Goran Eriksson's skipper was once again excellent at the back against Arsenal. The Gunners eventually got the winner in the last ten minutes, but Dunne was still outstanding, proving an almost immovable obstacle in the most stubborn of defences.

Centre Back: Paul Scharner - Wigan Athletic

Scharner proved his worth at both ends against West Ham at Upton Park as he helped marshall the Latics' back line against a dominant Hammers side. He then popped up with one of the goals of the day, a perfect overhead kick from Emile Heskey's knockdown as Chris Hutchings' men headed home with a credible point.

Left Back: Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur

Old Trafford cannot be the easiest place to make your Premiership debut as an away player, but 18-year-old Bale was confident and sharp from the start. Getting forward was of little difficulty to the Welsh youngster, who helped create chances, while also acting as part of a solid Spurs defence that very nearly left the champions frustrated yet again this season.

Midfield: Cesc Fabregas - Arsenal

The prodigious Spaniard continues to lead the way for the Gunners this season, already showing far more goal-scoring prowess this term than he did last and this weekend grabbing the crucial goal that ended City's stubborn resistance at the Emirates. Indeed, Fabregas was not afraid to shoot and his usual calmness in the middle of the park and accuracy of passing was vital in an important home win for Arsene Wenger's side.

Midfield: Momo Sissoko - Liverpool

Getting on the scoresheet should be reason enough for Liverpool's goal-shy midfielder to make the team of the week, though he combined a trademark midfield command with his duck-breaker to ensure what little possession Sunderland had of the ball at the Stadium of Light did not last very long. A very solid showing in the absence of Steven Gerrard!

Midfield: Ashley Young - Aston Villa

The ex-Watford winger was a constant threat to the Fulham defence on Saturday, repeatedly threatening to wreak havoc on the Villa left. His industry and ability eventually led to a cross-cum-shot that saw Zat Kinght turn the ball into his own net and Young provided the spark that Villa needed to go on and grab their first win of the season.

Forward: Nani - Manchester United

Again, the United new boy was a constant thorn in the side of the opposition and although he, like his fellow Red Devil attackers, found the Spurs defence very hard to break down, his constant work in making runs and finding space was rewarded with a screamer of a goal (albeit it one that Sir Alex Ferguson wants Carlos Tevez to claim). When Cristiano Ronaldo returns from suspension, United's double-Portuguese threat will frighten anyone.

Forward: Cameron Jerome - Birmingham City

Welcome to the Premiership. Jerome was alert all day against Derby on Saturday and had bagged his first goal within the opening minute. He added a second to win the match in the second half and his power and movement were a persistent threat to a Rams defence that is beginning to find the going very tough at the top level.

Forward: Nicola Anelka - Bolton Wanderers

Speculation may continue to link the Frenchman with a move away from the Reebok, but as things stand he is continuing to give his all for the Trotters and inspired Sammy Lee's men to a surprisingly comfortable 3-0 win over Reading on Saturday. With the hosts already a goal up at the Reebok, Anelka showed coolness and class to add a neat second and set up new boy Daniel Braaten for the third in an all-round excellent performance.

Premier League Team Of The Week: Round 5(goal.com)

Craig Gordon (Sunderland): The Scot commands a staggering fee for a goalkeeper and many south of the border knew little of his abilities. Against United Gordon was immense and was extremely unlucky to finish off on the loosing side after some impressive saves.

2 Gareth Bale (Tottenham): The former Southampton prodigy showed why Spurs splashed out on him with a solid display and managing to score from a fine solo run and finish. Impressive.

3 Danny Higginbotham (Sunderland): Higginbotham performed well against his old club after being brought in by Keane late in the transfer window. A brave headed clearance summed up his commitment and determination. Will be a vital addition to Sunderland’s squad this season.

4 Younes Kaboul (Tottenham): Opened the scoring and was impressive on his return from injury. Strong and pacy, Tottenham fans can expect a lot from him this season.

5 Mario Melchiot (Wigan): The well travelled Dutchman was solid in defence and made some good runs going forward. Melchiot has adapted well to life with Wigan following his summer switch.

6 Ryan Babel (Liverpool): The former Ajax man showed his class with a stunning goal as Liverpool destroyed Derby County. Definitely one to watch this season.

6 Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal): The Czech international is proving to be an asset to Arsenal providing he can stay fit. With two goals in his last two games Rosicky has shown that he may yet provide the goals Pires was famed for.

8 Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal): Who says the fiery Spaniard can’t score for Arsenal? Fabregas has chipped in with an impressive haul for the Gunners, already surpassing his tally for last season.

9 Jermaine Pennant: (Liverpool): The former Arsenal man was awesome as Benitez's men ripped into newly promoted Derby. His pace and trickery and guile were far too much for Billy Davies’ men.

10 Robbie Keane (Tottenham): Was involved in everything good that Spurs did as Jol’s men took a commanding lead. When he was eventually substituted for Defoe things started to go wrong for Tottenham as Fulham completed an unlikely comeback.

11 Craig Bellamy (West Ham): The Welsh international has settled in much faster than he managed to during his time at Liverpool and his goal showed how lethal he can be if his pace is put to good use.

Honourable Mentions:

Steve Harper was impressive in goal, keeping out Shay Given. David Rozenhal was immense at the back for Newcastle, and. Middlesbrough’s David Wheater and Andrew Taylor impressed. Martin Laursen and Zat Knight were a formidable centre-back pairing for Aston Villa against Chelsea.
Thomas Gravesen impressed on his return to Everton with a stunning display, while Xavi Alonso made Liverpool tick in midfield. Jermaine Jenas impressed in Tottenham’s draw with Fulham. And the pace and directness on the flanks of Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor helped Villa to victory over Chelsea.
Louis Saha underlined his qualities to Sir Alex as the club’s only recognized out and out striker grabbed the winning goal against Sunderland

Flops of the week:

Poor old Michael Owen gets to read his slating in the press while he is in the waiting room before his scan. Pretty much the entire city of Derby makes it into the Flops XI this week. It would have been six Rams players in the team, as Tyrone Mears got the same points as Fulham's Chris Baird, but we'll let him off because it was a rampant Arsenal he faced. The plaudits for Man City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel are beginning to dry up in most quarters, except among his dad's pundit mates.

Fabregas is joined by team mate Adebayor as one of the season's top performers due to the Togo international's scintillating form of late. Julio Arca's goal against his former employers at the weekend goes to show what a shining light he has been for Middlesbrough so far this season.

Goalkeeper

Steve Harper (Newcastle Utd): Harper is football's Mr Patience, the understudy to Newcastle's consistent Irishman, Shay Given. But Given's injury has allowed Harper another run in the first team, and against West Ham he was in excellent form, solid and alert as the last line of defence.

Defenders

Sylvain Distin (Portsmouth): Blackburn Rovers lost their unbeaten record against a Portsmouth side whose solid back-line was resolute, with Distin the star defender. he ex-Manchester City centre-back put in an outstanding performance alongside Sol Campbell.

Johan Djourou (Birmingham City): On loan from Arsenal until January, the Swiss international was exceptional in successfully helping to keep the Liverpool attack at bay at Anfield. He and Liam Ridgewell formed a formidable barrier for the Blues.

David Wheater (Middlesbrough): Boro needed a gritty performance against the odds at The Riverside in the Tees-Wear derby with Sunderland after suffering a series of injury blows that disrupted their team pattern and rhythm. Wheater epitomised that with a gutsy defensive display in a pulsating 2-2 draw.

Charles N'Zogbia (Newcastle Utd): Normally a midfielder, the Frenchman was deployed as an emergency left-back against West Ham and excelled in the role. N'Zogbia was exceptional, a constant thorn in the Hammers' side going forward down the left flank, settimg up two goals and scoring the Magpies' third himself.

Midfielders

Hameur Bouazza (Fulham): The former Watford midfielder was a key man in the Fulham midfield in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City, and it was his free-kick that restored Fulham’s lead immediately after half-time.

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal): People are running out of superlatives for the 20-year-old Catalan who is running the Arsenal midfield in imperious fashion, picking out passes that are both sumptuous and incisive. His pass for Adebayor's first was a model of vision and simplicity combined, and he chipped in with sixth goal in consecutive matches.

Martin Petrov (Manchester City): Sven-Goran Eriksson has created a breath of fresh air in the Premiership with his new-look City side, and some of the players he has brought to Eastlands are a revelation to English audiences. One such is Petrov, the Bulgarian from Atletico Madrid who dazzled again at Fulham. Petrov was on target with City's first and third goals, and it was the rebound from his shot that Mpenza nodded in for the second.

Ryan Giggs (Manchester United): The veteran Welsh winger seemed to be involved in all United's best attacking moves against Chelsea, and on another day might have had a couple of goals to his credit. But he will probably settle for the technically perfect in-swinging cross with the outside of his right boot from which Carlos Tevez headed United's crucial first goal.

Strikers

Mark Viduka (Newcastle Utd): When the big Aussie is in the mood he is almost unplayable, and was certainly in the mood against West Ham. Adept at holding the ball, bringing others in to play and using his power vand touch to create time and space, Viduka showed different aspects of his repertoire - including speed of thought - to score Newcastle's opening two goals, before going off with a hamstring problem.

Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal): The Togolese striker gave a classic demonstration of centre-forward play in a rampant Arsenal performance, becoming in the process the first man to score a hat-trick at the Emirates. He has scored six goals in his last three League games to go top of the Premiership scoring charts, and is currently on fire as a target man with an aerial dimension previously missing from Arsenal's game.

setantasports

Keeper: Steve Harper
How many Newcastle fans panicked when Shay Given got injured? Well they need not have worried, for Harper is showing the kind of form that justifies Sam Allardyce’s decision to leave the Republic of Ireland shot-stopper on the bench.

Right back: Glen Johnson
Would Avram Grant have allowed Glen Johnson to leave Stamford Bridge? On this performance probably not. The former Chelsea defender was back to his best as he raided down the right, while keeping Morten Gamst Pedersen tucked away in the Ewood Park shadows.

Centre back: Johan Djourou
The wall that Liverpool just could not escape. Aided by partner Liam Ridgewell, Djourou kept Dirk Kuyt and Andriy Voronin, and then later Fernando Torres and Peter Crouch quiet, making some superb last-ditch tackles. Another gem unearthed by Mr Wenger.

Centre back: Sylvain Distin
Not many strikers will enjoy playing against Portsmouth these days. Joined by Sol Campbell in what is becoming a sizeist defence, Distin did not put a foot wrong as Harry Redknapp’s men claimed a valuable three points against Blackburn.

Left back: Charles N’Zogbia
The hair alone makes N’Zogbia a stand-out player, but his performance matched his exuberant lid at St James’ Park on Sunday. The Frenchman delivered two wicked crosses for Mark Viduka to bag a brace, and then he turned goalscorer to wrap up a rare home win for The Magpies.

Right midfield: Gary O’Neil
When Gareth Southgate stayed up past his bed time on transfer deadline day to sign Gary O’Neil, few people would have disagreed it was an astute signing. A clever player with an eye for a pass, O’Neil was unlucky not to finish on the winning side against Sunderland.

Central midfield: Cesc Fabregas
The superlatives are beginning to run out for Arsenal’s midfield maestro, who has now scored six goals in seven games for The Gunners. Another long-ranger (aided by Stephen Bywater’s fairy-soft hands) plus a sublime assist for Emmanuel Adebayor ensured the Spaniard remains the player of the season to date.

Central midfield: Gareth Barry
There are some players in football who, like a fine wine, just get better with age. Gareth Barry’s understanding of the game is clear for all to see right now, which can only be good news for England.

Left midfield: Martin Petrov
Simply electric. Those who know Spanish football have been waiting for this kind of performance from Petrov, who petrified the Fulham defence all evening. Scoring two and creating another, the former Atletico Madrid man has every right to wonder how he did not finish on the winning team at Craven Cottage.

Forward: Emmanuel Adebayor
A second consecutive appearance in the team of the week for Arsenal’s Togo talisman, who ran Derby ragged at Emirates Stadium. Sometimes erratic but increasingly deadly, Adebayor’s hat-trick ensured Robin Van Persie could put his feet up over the weekend.

Forward: Mark Viduka
So often a player of class and touch, Viduka showed his fox-in-the-box instincts against West Ham with two predatory strikes. A stunning header got the Toon on their way, before one of the Australian’s uglier finishes made sure the locals went home in a Geordie wonderland.

EUROSPORT.COM'A GÖRE:

Martin Petrov and Javier Garrido join the Brazilian in our elite XI while Robert Green, David Bentley and Joleon Lescott give Steve McClaren a reminder of their England potential. GOAL.COM'A GÖRE:

Premier League Team Of The Week: Round 8

1 Robert Green (West Ham): The former Norwich man was outstanding as Arsenal travelled to Upton Park. While Green will not be happy with the result, his performance was of the highest order as he produced some stunning stops to frustrate the likes of Van Persie and Adebayor.

2 Ashley Cole (Chelsea): One of his better displays for Chelsea since moving from Arsenal. Defended well and got forward to try and support Chelsea’s misfiring strikers.

3 Kolo Toure (Arsenal): The Ivorian was on hand to bail out defensive partner Senderos on numerous occasions as West Ham looked to cause another upset against the Gunners. Toure’s strength and lightning recovery pace helped make sure that did not happen.

4 Nemanja Vidic (Man United): While his defensive partner looked out of sorts, the big Serb was a tower of strength as United struggled to a 1-0. Vidic has been a consistent performer since his arrival and this performance will have pleased Sir Alex.

5 Joleon Lescott (Everton): The former Wolves man has been immense this term and opened the scoring for Everton. Will get his England chance soon if he continues like this.

6 Ronaldo (Man United): Starting to look like he is about to pick up where he left off. The Portuguese winger was handed United’s winning goal by some sloppy play but he made no mistake. Lively throughout.

7 Jason Koumas (Wigan): How it has taken so long for Koumas to show his talent at this level is still a mystery. The Welsh international cut Liverpool to shreds every time he was given the ball.

8 Elano: (Man City): The Brazilian has been City’s best offensive player since his arrival in the blue half of Manchester. After some flashes of creative brilliance, Elano scored an impressive free-kick to put the shine on a good display.

9 David Bentley (Blackburn): Bentley looks set to explode again after a few quiet games. Criticised for refusing an Under-21 call-up, Blackburn fans will be glad he did if the rest means more performances like this. Took his goal well.

10 Benjani (Portsmouth): One way to show your manager that he should be playing you more often is to score, and that’s just what he did, three times. The hat-trick was of the highest order, from a player who has clearly found his confidence.

11 Robin Van Persie (Arsenal): Known more for his technical ability with his feet, RVP showed that he can cut it in the air too. The Dutchman’s headed goal was the difference in a tight game that saw Arsenal continue their tremendous start to the season. After an explosive pre-season, Van Persie looks set to star after cooling off at the beginning of the season.

Honourable Mentions:

Kasey Keller made some stunning saves in goal for Fulham.
Claude Davis was immense at the back for Derby, and. Pompey’s Sylvain Distin impressed, despite his side conceding 4 goals.
Stephen Pearson was impressive in midfield for Derby, while Kevin Nolan looked more like last year's player against the Rams.
Dean Ashton underlined his return to form with a strong performance, unsettling Senderos in West Ham’s 1-0 defeat by the league leaders.

setanta sports'a göre:.

Keeper: Robert Green
Robert Green invariably saves his best performances for Arsenal. On this occasion it did not lead to West Ham securing an impossible victory but it did prevent The Gunners running away with the match at Upton Park.

Right back: Chris Baird
Chris Baird was consistency personified at right back against Chelsea. It does not sound exciting, in fact it sounds dull, but that is the art of defending and Fulham will no doubt have appreciated the defender's sterling efforts.

Centre back: Aaron Hughes
To have two defenders from Fulham in one team is asking for trouble, just ask Lawrie Sanchez, but the performances of Aaron Hughes and Baird were big reasons why Chelsea were again frustrated in the goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

Centre back: Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand might not have expected such a busy afternoon at Birmingham. As it was the England international was called upon to put out fires in the Manchester United defence as his team rode their luck and Blues cursed theirs.

Left back: Joleon Lescott
A dearth of outstanding left backs means Joleon Lescott is shunted into the team from his more central starting role against Middlesbrough. Lescott gave Everton the lead with a close-range header and furthered his England claims with a solid performance in defence.

Right midfield: Mikel Arteta
Ladies' day at Goodison Park but there was little that was easy on the eye. It was the two sets of players that were the problem. There was plenty of effort, and not a few missed chances, but when it came to putting your foot on the ball and picking out a pass, only Mikel Arteta was capable, as he demonstrated artfully by assisting his team's second goal, scored by Steven Pienaar.

Central midfield: James Milner
James Milner was Newcastle's outstanding performer at Manchester City. That in itself should not guarantee him a place in any other team, let alone this, but the industrious star, who switched positions a number of times throughout the match, did his utmost to inspire the lacklustre visitors.

Central midfield: Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard was not at his best against Wigan on Saturday but Gerrard at less than full throttle still edges out Josip Skoko, even though the Australian also impressed at The JJB Stadium.

Left midfield: Joe Cole
Joe Cole tried his hardest to make the breakthrough against Fulham but Baird, Hughes etc held firm. Cole was guilty of blazing over the bar on at least one occasion as Chelsea rued more missed chances but he was still his team's chief threat.

Free role: Elano
If Mike Bassett taught us and Sven anything it is that four, four, ******* two is no guarantee of success, and, in fact, it often leads to spectacular failure. Manchester City have mastered the latter but Elano fulfils the spectacular quota, not least with the wonderful free-kick he scored against Newcastle. Hence he is afforded a free role behind the weekend's most prolific striker.

Forward: Benjani Mwaruwari
A lot of things were unexpected at Fratton Park. No-one thought Portsmouth and Reading would break a Premier League scoring record and even less could have envisaged Benjani scoring a hat-trick. Incredibly both things did happen and here we pay homage to a striker who was once much-maligned.

setanta sports:

Keeper: Craig Gordon (Sunderland)
The Sunderland keeper was beaten three times on Sunday, but he proved his class with a number of decent saves and caught our reporter’s eye.

Right back: Vedran Corluka (Manchester City)
The Croatia international was one of Sven’s summer signings and he proved his quality against Middlesbrough, as he stifled England winger Stewart Downing in the 3-1 win.

Centre back: Chris Samba (Blackburn)
Samba was a relative unknown when Mark Hughes plucked him from Hertha Berlin, but he has not looked out of place in The Premier League and he produced another dominant display as Rovers proved too good for Birmingham.

Centre back: Sol Campbell (Portsmouth)
The former Arsenal man is enjoying an Indian Summer on the South Coast and he kept Fulham’s strikers quiet as Pompey racked up another win.

Left back: Hermann Hreidarsson (Portsmouth)
Hreidarsson has been a strong ally for Campbell this term and he put in another solid shift at left back in the 2-0 win over Fulham and capped his display with a goal.

Right midfield: David Bentley (Blackburn)
Bentley has made a fantastic start to the season with Rovers. He scored the opener in the win over Birmingham and was a thorn in the side of Blues all afternoon.

Centre midfield: Sean Davis (Portsmouth)
The third Portsmouth player to appear in the Team of the Week, Davis produced an all-action display in the trenches to help his current club see off his old team.

Left midfield: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)
The gifted Spaniard fills the final berth in our three-man midfield for the way he orchestrated play in Arsenal’s win over Sunderland

Forward: Elano (Manchester City)
The Brazilian has won many admirers since making the move to Eastlands and he grabbed two more fantastic goals as City continued their fine start to the campaign.

Forward: Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
The Dutchman has stepped up to the plate following Thierry Henry’s departure and he grabbed two goals as Arsenal battled past Sunderland.

Forward: Robbie Keane (Tottenham)
The Irishman capped a fine display with two goals and he was unfortunate not to be on the winning side, as Liverpool grabbed a point right at the death.

...........Steve Howard (26.11) ...............Benni McCarthy (27.80)

SETANTA.SPORTS

Keeper: Antti Niemi (Fulham)
When your goalkeeper ends up man of the match at home to Derby you know there's something wrong. In this instance it was Fulham's lamentable defence but at least it allowed Antti Niemi to showcase his considerable talents as a shot-stopper, denying Kenny Miller, in particular, on more than one occasion.

Right back: Vedran Corluka (Manchester City)
For the second week in succession, Vedran Corluka slots in at right back as snuggly as Sven Goran Eriksson has fitted into life at The City of Manchester Stadium. Another clean sheet against Birmingham on Saturday enhanced both men's growing reputations.

Centre back: Kolo Toure (Arsenal)
Kolo Toure opened the scoring against Bolton with a long-range free-kick and mopped up whatever The Trotters could muster in attack in a comfortable afternoon for the Ivorian.

Centre back: Rio Ferdinand (Man United)
Outstanding for United so far this season, Rio Ferdinand did not even miss his defensive partner Nemanja Vidic as he provided the basis for United's 4-1 win at Aston Villa.

Left back: Joleon Lescott (Everton)
Put a poor performance at left back for England in midweek behind him by putting in another good one for Everton in the same position. Joleon Lescott wouldn't be the first consummate Premier League performer to find the step-up to international level not altogether enjoyable...

Right midfield: Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
No doubt delighted not to be hated by his own supporters, Frank Lampard returned to Chelsea and orchestrated his team's 2-0 win at Middlesbrough, laying on the first goal for Didier Drogba with an astute pass and controlling the Riverside midfield.

Central midfield: Tugay (Blackburn)
Tugay only scores one league goal a season but it is always special. A 30-yard thunderbolt that bamboozled Marcus Hahnemann was the Turk's goalscoring contribution for this campaign but, thankfully, he offers so much more to his side than just goals, as he proved against Reading dictating the team's tempo.

Central midfield: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)

A fixture in our teams of the week this season, Cesc Fab-ulous, as he may have been rechristened before, and if he hasn't then he certainly should be, was once again doing fantastic and flamboyant things in Arsenal's midfield, as The Gunners extended their winning run to 11 matches.

Left midfield: Nani (Man United)
Nani switched from right to left against Aston Villa but slots in on the left, partly because there were no other alternatives but also because the Portuguese gave a confident performance and offered United plenty of width and tricks.

Forward: Wayne Rooney (Man United)
Wayne Rooney passed up the chance to score a hat-trick by missing a penalty at Aston Villa but the England international is certainly getting back to top form after a fairly low key 2007.

Forward: Benni McCarthy (Blackburn)
Nudging out giant Paraguayan strike partner Roque Santa Cruz and mountain of a man Kenwyne Jones is no easy task but Benni McCarthy started his first match in over a month for Blackburn on Saturday and does what he does best - score goals
