Bundesliga Team Of The Week: Round 12

................. Nikolov

Galindo Kukielka Eggimann Beck

Kießling Zé Roberto Barbarez Epalle

...............Gekas Olic

Goalkeeper:

1) Oka Nikolov (Frankfurt)

Nikolov came in to replace regular first-choice keeper Markus Pröll, who was suffering from a fever, and stepped up to the mark with aplomb. His save from Luca Toni after 13 seconds set the tone for the afternoon as he went on to pull off a number of important saves to keep Bayern at bay. It was only the second game of the season that Bayern were held scoreless, and great credit for that goes to stand-in keeper Nikolov.

Defenders:

2) Aaron Galindo (Frankfurt)

Mexican defender Galindo, making his first start of the season, showed no nerves or rustiness against the potent Bayern attack. Alongside Chris in the centre of the Frankfurt back line, he managed to keep the likes of Klose, Toni and Ribéry at bay.

3) Mariusz Kukielka (Cottbus)

Kukielka was a rock at the back for Cottbus as they secured their first win of the season against Schalke. Admittedly Schalke were rather disappointing as an attacking force, but whatever threat they did pose, Kukielka was on hand to snuff out.

4) Mario Eggimann (Karlsruhe)

KSC got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over MSV Duisburg and it was defender Eggimann who got the all-important goal. His headed goal from Tamas Hajnal’s free kick secured Karlsruhe’s first win in four games to secure their place in the top five.

5) Andreas Beck (Stuttgart)

Making only his second start of the season, Andreas Beck helped secure Stuttgart’s second win in succession. Is this a coincidence? The 20 year old full back is certainly looking to take full advantage of the chance handed to him by Armin Veh.

Midfielders:

6) Zé Roberto (Bayern Munich)

Zé Roberto is fast becoming Bayern’s most consistent performer. His role in midfield is a multi-facetted one, with the Brazilian combining his defensive duties with joining in the attacks when possible. He was one of Bayern’s most prominent attacking players against Frankfurt.

7) Stefan Kießling (Bayer Leverkusen)

Kießling was on top form again against Bielefeld as Bayer chalked up a 4-0 win. He capped a fine performance by laying on the fourth goal for Sergej Barbarez.

8) Sergej Barbarez (Bayer Leverkusen)

Two goals and two assists in a 4-0 win was not a bad days work for Leverkusen’s veteran midfielder. With Bernd Schneider still out injured, much responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of Bosnian international Sergej Barbarez. He opened the scoring in the 9th minute and completed the rout in the 80th minute with his second of the game.

9) Joel Epalle (Bochum)

Epalle produced his best performance against Wolfsburg in their 5-3 win. The Cameroon attacking midfielder set up both of Stanislav Sestak’s goals and then capped a fine game with his side’s fifth goal of the afternoon.

Forwards:

10) Theofanis Gekas (Bayer Leverkusen)

Last season’s Bundesliga top scorer Theofanis Gekas showed signs against Bielefeld of his form from last season. Two goals within the space of five minutes at the end of the first half put Michael Skibbe’s side in full control. The Greek striker has now hit 6 goals in 11 games.

11) Ivica Olic (Hamburg)

Olic was a constant threat in the side of Hertha Berlin as HSV as the home side moved to within two points of leaders Bayern Munich. The Croatian forced the opening goal when his shot could only be parried by keeper Drobny, with Guerrero on hand to put Huub Stevens’ side 1-0 up.

Honourable mentions:

Hugo Almeida continues to find the net for Werder Bremen. Guy Demel and Rafael van der Vaart impressed in Hamburg’s 1-0 win over Hertha, while Stanislav Sestak’s double against Wolfsburg deserves praise.

Sergio Pinto was again on top of his game for Hannover against Dortmund. Grafite scored twice for Wolfsburg, although that was not enough to beat Bochum.

Mario Gomez’ goal against Nürnberg proved decisive, while Hans Meyer should be pleased with the performance of Zvjezdan Misimovic.

TEAM OF THE WEEK:

.................... Adler

Magnin Fathi Höwedes Sarpei

Jensen Hitzlsperger Diego Kießling

.............Kern ....... Gomez

Goalkeeper:

1) Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen)

Leverkusen’s 22 year old keeper was cited by trainer Michael Skibbe as one of the main reasons behind his side’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg. The youngster pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Marcelinho, Krzynowek and Grafite. For a long while it looked like he could not be beaten, only for Manuel Friedrich to put through his own net to deny Adler the clean sheet.

Defenders:

2) Ludovic Magnin (Stuttgart)

The Swiss defender was one of the driving forces behind the first half blitz that sent Bayern Munich crashing to their first loss of the season. It was his surging run and cross that set up the first fortunate goal for Gomez, and his precise long pass to Hilbert started off the move, which led to the second from Bastürk.

3) Malik Fathi (Hertha Berlin)

Hertha’s Berlin-born German A-international Malik Fathi was their top performers under difficult conditions at the Olympic Stadium against Hannover. A heavy snowstorm prior to kick-off made the pitch extremely difficult, but Fathi played a large part in keeping Hannover at bay.

4) Benedikt Höwedes (Schalke)

Schalke’s 19 year old defender, thrown in at the deep end, performed admirably for the Königsblauen against Hamburg and didn’t look out of place. Called up to replace the suspended Bordon, the youngster nearly capped a fine performance with a goal, only for David Jarolim to clear his header off the line.

5) Hans Sarpei (Bayer Leverkusen)

The former Wolfsburg man produced another measured performance at the back for Leverkusen as they climbed to fifth. Sarpei is fast becoming a key part of one of the meanest defences in the Bundesliga.

Midfielders:

6) Daniel Jensen (Werder Bremen)

The Danish midfielder laid on two assists for Diego and Naldo as he impressed against Karlsruhe. With Diego running the show and taking all the plaudits, the work of Daniel Jensen should not go unmentioned.

7) Thomas Hitzlsperger (Stuttgart)

It is no coincidence that the recent return to form of Stuttgart has come at the time when the ‘Hammer’ has returned from injury. Against Bayern he was a driving force in midfield and although we didn’t see any of his trademark long range goals, he made sure that the Bayern midfield didn’t get a foothold in the game.

8) Stefan Kießling (Bayer Leverkusen)

A goal and an assist sent Bayer Leverkusen on their way to an important win at the Volkswagen Arena to take them up to fifth in the table. His shot forced Simon Jentzsch to parry out to the incoming Barnetta for the first goal, before he added the second himself in the second half.

9) Diego (Werder Bremen)

The Brazilian midfielder’s performance against Karlsruhe at the Weser Stadion was simply sublime. His two first half goals put Werder firmly in the driving seat, and he teased and toyed with KSC throughout the game.

Forwards:

10) Enrico Kern (Hansa Rostock)

A hat trick with his right foot sealed an important win for Rostock in the Eastern derby at the DKB Arena. The first was an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area, and the second a lob over the advancing Tremmel only a minute after the Cottbus equaliser. His third goal came fifteen minutes from time after Energie failed to clear the ball sufficiently.

11) Mario Gomez (Stuttgart)

Two goals, albeit one of them in off his stomach, against Bayern Munich set Stuttgart on their way to a confidence boosting victory. The way VfB cut Bayern open and with ‘Super Mario’ Gomez getting his name on the score sheet was reminiscent of the glory days of last season.

Honourable mentions:

After Stuttgart’s great win over Bayern Munich, mentions should also go to Yildiray Bastürk, Roberto Hilbert and striker Cacau for the performances.

Bochum’s stand-in keeper Rene Renno played well in the Friday win over Duisburg, as did Stanislav Sestak.

Ivan Rakitic was one of Schalke’s top performers against Hamburg, while Rafael van der Vaart led from the front for HSV with a top display.

Hugo Almeida grabbed his seventh goal of the season in Werder’s 4-0 win over Karlsruhe.

......................Renno

Wolf Mertesacker Naldo Eichner

Hajnal Hilbert Dabrowski Ribéry

.............Kuranyi Mieciel

Goalkeeper:

1) René Renno (Bochum)

With all the plaudits going to the strike partnership of Sestak and Mieciel for their goals in Bochum’s 3-0 win over Bielefeld, attention has been taken away from the top performance of keeper René Renno. The stand-in keeper produced a number a fine saves to deny Bielefeld and ensure that the goals scored by the forwards led to victory.

Defenders:

2) Christian Eichner (Karlsruhe)

The 24 year old left back put in a formidable defensive display against Hertha Berlin in the Friday match and capped that performance with an assist for the first goal. His good cross from the right was headed in by Tamas Hajnal for the equaliser.

3) Per Mertesacker (Werder Bremen)

Werder kept up the pressure on Bayern with a 2-0 win away at Cottbus, and huge credit goes to the defensive duo of Mertesacker and Naldo. The German international centre back was at his imperious best. Forced to attack after going behind, the Lausitzer went all out for a goal only to be denied by Merte and his partner.

4) Naldo (Werder Bremen)
Formed a solid defensive barrier alongside Per Mertesacker, to give Werder a solid platform on which to build their win. With Werder the highest scorers in the Bundesliga, their defence is now showing the form necessary to challenge Bayern for the leadership.

5) Andreas Wolf (Nürnberg)

Wolfsburg finally gained a confidence boosting victory against Dortmund and one of the cornerstones of the win was the defensive showing of defender Andreas Wolf. Alongside Dominik Reinhardt, he kept the Dortmund attack under wraps to secure a vital win.

Midfielders:

6) Christoph Dabrowski (Bochum)

Scored the third of the afternoon to seal a 3-0 win for Bochum as they downed Bielefeld at the Rewirpower Stadion. The former Werder and Hannover midfielder enjoyed one of his best games of the season so far.

7) Tamas Hajnal (Karlsruhe)

The Hungarian scored the all-important equaliser that got KSC back into the game after Marko Pantelic had put Hertha ahead in the Friday match. His header from Christian Eichner’s cross set up Edmund Becker’s side for another important win.

8) Roberto Hilbert (Stuttgart)

With the pressure on Stuttgart to follow up their win over Bayern Munich with another three points, Hilbert stepped up to the mark with a fine performance at the Commerzbank Arena against Frankfurt. He scored the important equaliser just before the interval, before setting up Ciprian Marica for the Swabians second of the afternoon.

9) Franck Ribéry (Bayern Munich)

Bayern’s French midfield genius was at his best against Wolfsburg putting in a sublime performance. His tenacity set up Klose for the first before he grabbed the second for the Bavarians. His performance was summed up by an incident in the first half when he chased down an apparently lost ball to rescue it at the bye-line before skilfully beating two defenders to provide a cross that begged to be headed in.

Forwards:

10) Marcin Mieciel (Bochum)

The Polish striker fired in two goals within three minutes in the opening quarter of an hour to put Bochum well and truly in the driving seat. Both goals were products of fine work from Stanislav Sestak and take the 31 year old forward onto 4 goals for the season.

11) Kevin Kuranyi (Schalke)

There was much talk before the game from Kuranyi about the importance of a win to set Schalke on a run of results and he certainly did his bit to ensure the Königsblauen took three points away from the AWD Arena. He scored one five minutes before the break and one five minutes after to set Schalke on the way to a 3-2 win over Hannover.

Honourable mentions:

Unlucky not to make this week’s Team of the Week, but worthy of a mention for their performances include Miroslav Klose for grabbing his 9th goal of the season, and Stanislav Sestak for his two assists for Bochum partner Mieciel.

Szabolcs Huszti was unlucky to end up on the losing side after scoring twice for Hannover against Schalke. Ivan Klasnic impressed in his long-awaited comeback for Werder Bremen against Cottbus. Tim Wiese was on top form also as Werder shut out the Lausitzer.
