Antalya finalists get down to business
There were suggestions that the facilities in Antalya, that hosts the UEFA European Under-17 Championship, could be described as a 'paradise of football'. But for home nation Turkey, opening opponents the Netherlands and fellow Group A contenders Scotland and Serbia, heaven would be a good performance on the pitch as the competition starts on Sunday.
Dutch return
For the second year running, Albert Stuivenberg's Netherlands team open the U17 finals against the hosts; they drew 2-2 with Belgium last season and were pipped to the semis. Now at the Mardan Sport Complex they take on Turkey, who three years ago beat the Dutch 2-0 to win the title in Italy. Stuivenberg, who lost Chelsea FC defender Jeffrey Bruma to injury on the eve of the finals, is mainly just delighted to be back. "First of all we are very pleased to be here again, 53 countries started this competition and only eight can play in the finals," he said. "The match against Turkey is going to be a very exciting match, two teams who like to play in a certain way that will be good for the spectators. Results on the pitch and experience for players are linked as the further you go the more experience you get, so I hope we are successful."
'Football festival'
Turkey are also depleted with the loss of two Galatasaray AS players that had been a key part of their two-year build-up to this event; defender Semih Kaya and versatile forward Cem Sultan. But striker Muhammed Demir and left-winger Eren Albayrak have joined the squad as they recover from injury, and coach Şenol Ustaömer declared: "I hope it will be an enjoyable competition for all of the teams. As you might guess, we are aiming to stay in the competition as long as possible. This is an opportunity for us to put on a feast of football. We have had our injury problems, but despite that we will do our best to be here until 16 May."
Scotland bow
While Turkey and the Netherlands have met for the U17 title, Scotland have not reached the finals since the switch from the U16 categorisation in 2001/02. "It is our first U17 finals, and we are looking forward to it immensely," said manager Ross Mathie ahead of their opener against Serbia at the World of Wonders Football Centre. "We have enjoyed the wonderful hospitality the Turkish FA have offered us in the training facilities and the hotel. But now the real business starts. It will be a difficult game for us as Serbia came out of a difficult group. But we will be doing our best, we are well prepared."
Serbian pride
Serbia coach Dejan Djurdjević like Mathie believes Turkey and the Netherlands are favourites to get through, but is unbowed. "We are very proud, it is a very big success to be among the last eight," he said. "We don't know the Scotland team very well, but they are in the finals so they should be a very good team. We will try to do our best to win."

Hosts deliver as Dutch come unstuck
Host-nation Turkey fired a warning to the their UEFA European Under-17 Championship rivals with a comfortable 3-0 defeat of the Netherlands.
Top spot
Slick passing in midfield and an attacking mindset were key to Turkey's success, as a first-half Öztürk Karataş goal was added to after the break by Özgür Çek and Muhammet Demir. Turkey top Group A ahead of Serbia, who defeated Scotland 2-0 earlier in the day.
Positive start
Turkey were quickly into their stride with Batuhan Karadeniz latching on to a Abdülkadir Kayalı pass to test Netherlands goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet inside three minutes. A goal looked like coming, and after Batuhan then came close with a header, Sertaç Eren's long ball fed Öztürk Karataş, who scored with an angled drive from the right side of the penalty area.
Netherlands chance
The Netherlands finally awoke, and registered their first effort on goal when winger Rajiv Van la Parra's shot was tipped round the post by goalkeeper Metin Uçar. However, that was as good as it got for both sides as a midfield battle ensued with neither team threatening before half-time.
Escape
Having come quickly out of the blocks in the first period, the hosts did the same after the restart as first left-back Özgür Çek and then Gökhan Töre threatened to extend Turkey's lead inside the opening ten minutes. Şenol Ustaömer's charges then had a scare when Geoffrey Castillion came close to connecting with Jerson Cabral's centre after 58 minutes.
Late salvo
Turkey, though, put the game beyond the Netherlands in the 71st minute when Gökhan supplied Eren Albayrak, who, from his position on the left, advanced towards goal before finding the net. They then added a third in added time at the end of the 80 minutes when Gökhan was again the provider, crossing for substitute Muhammet Demir to head past Zoet.
