İTALYA SERIE A GIORNATA/WEEK 15
Team of the week (4-3-3):
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus): Yet again proved why he is the best in the world as he managed to stop Milan from scoring with some brilliant saves.
Alessandro Nesta (Milan): The San Siro applauded his performance as the Rossoneri veteran still continues to be one of the best defenders out there.
Walter Samuel (Inter): Perfect defending against the Viola strikers. It will be difficult for Materazzi to reclaim his first team place.
Juan (Roma): Does not make any mistakes in defence and then helps out the attack whenever there is the need: indeed, he scored the opening goal for the Giallorossi.
Moris Carrozzieri (Atalanta): Very important for the Bergamaschi’s defence; apart from being solid, he is also quite spectacular in his defensive duties. A joy to watch.
Andrea Pirlo (Milan): He finished fifth in the Golden Ball race, but fact is that he is the number one player in his role. There’s no one like him in Serie A, or in any other league.
Luis Antonio Jimenez (Inter): Only played because of Stankovic’s injury, but that was good luck for both him and Inter as he played a wonderful game, scoring against his former team.
Cristiano Doni (Atlanta): Still going on strong and claiming a place in the next Euro 2008 squad with assists and goals in every game.
Julio Cruz (Inter): What can you say about a player who always scores whenever he plays? Ruthless finisher.
Claudio Bellucci (Sampdoria): The Marassi stadium gave him a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the game. Two goals, two other important goal scoring opportunities and many assists led him to the man of the match award.
Goran Pandev (Lazio): Scored a goal, but more importantly he worked hard for the team. The Macedonian was always trying to pass the ball to his comrades, which many felt was a weakness in his game before.

Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus): An incredible save from Rocchi in the second half was just the highlight of his show, which awarded the Bianconeri the three points. Best goalkeeper ever?
Christian Chivu (Inter): Did his defensive duties well, and also looked Inter’s most dangerous forward thanks to some powerful shots from the distance.
Gianluca Comotto (Torino): Great game for the Granata defender to ensure that Roma looked second best on the pitch. Not even the red card in the final minutes of the match can tarnish his performance.
Massimo Paci (Parma): He has been very consistent for the Crociati, and will probably earn a move to a big team by the end of the season. The new Cannavaro?
Daniele Portanova (Siena): Cancelled Zalayeta out of the game and offered Frick the assist for the opening goal. An important element of the Tuscan side’s defence.
Cristiano Zanetti (Juventus): Apart from doing the usual dirty work for his team, he also invented two brilliant assists for Del Piero. Quantity and quality.
Sebastian Giovinco (Empoli): What an incredible player! Another wonderful performance with a goal and a lot of good assists for his team-mates. Would walk into any Serie A team.
Andrea Gasbarroni (Parma): Received a standing ovation on his way off the pitch. Brilliant game and wonderful player; ready for an important club.
Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus): What better way to prove that he’s not a finished player and still capable of playing from the first minute. Might not be able to play 90 minutes every week, but he can surely make the best use of the chances he is given.

Matteo Sereni (Torino): Unbeatable as Napoli could not find a way to score past the Granata keeper. He was unassailable even from the penalty spot as Sereni, yet again, managed to save a penalty for his team. Lazio will be furious after letting him go.
Javier Zanetti (Inter): Incredible performance by the Nerazzurri’s captain who raced up and down the field with his usual grit and determination.
Maicon (Inter): One of the best wing-backs in the world both offensively and defensively. Devastating when he goes forward and rock solid when he defends.
Alessandro Nesta (Milan): Solid display by the Rossoneri's central defender, who kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the game - no mean feat.
Carlos Valdez (Reggina): Since Renzo Ulivieri took over the Amaranti, Valdez has been performing exceptionally, and the game against Catania was the best one of the year. This bodes well for Reggina’s season.
Mario Santana (Fiorentina): Brilliant match by Santana on his birthday as he capped his performance with a lot of quality, quantity, and even 2 great goals.
Esteban Cambiasso (Inter): The Nerazzurri’s most important midfielder: he is the only player that Roberto Mancini cannot do without. Another excellent performance against Milan, with the goal being the cherry on top.
Luca Vigiani (Reggina): A hat-trick is no cakewalk for a forward, let alone a midfielder like Vigiani. A game to remember for the journeyman pro.
Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina): Cagliari’s defence could not control him as he bounded around causing havoc in their rearguard. Two goals and an assist to end the year on a high for the Romanian Player of the Year.
Julio Cruz (Inter): All adjectives have been used to describe the Serie A striker with the highest ratio of goals scored per matches played. Whenever he takes to the field, Inter are guaranteed at least one goal.
Antonio Di Natale (Udinese): Another quality display for Di Natale who had a wonderful year both with Udinese and the Italian national side. A goal and an assist are the least that he deserves.

Serie A Team Of The Season So Far
Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus) – Julio Cesar and Sebastien Frey will feel they have every right to own this position, however the truth is that Buffon has pulled off numerous world-class saves so far this campaign. The stop from Tommaso Rocchi in week 16 was one of the greatest saves I have ever seen.
Right Back: Maicon (Inter) – Maicon has been in stunning form for Inter and is now arguably the best right wing-back in the world along with Sevilla’s Daniel Alves. His defensive qualities, like most Brazilians could do with a little improvement, however he more than makes up for this offensively.
Centre Back: Ivan Cordoba (Inter) – The Colombian ‘Jack-in-the-box’ has been an absolute colossus for Inter this season and is one of the key reasons why they have conceded just nine goals in 17 games. The best defender in Serie A so far this term.
Centre Back: Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus) – Chiellini edges out Inter’s Walter Samuel and Fiorentina’s Alessandro Gamberini for a spot alongside Cordoba. The Juve man has been a revelation ever since switching into the centre of defence from his natural left back position. Chiellini’s heart, determination, and character has symbolized everything that the Bianconeri are about.
Left Back: Juan Manuel Vargas (Catania) – The Peruvian international joined Catania from Colon de Santa Fe in 2006 and has proved a massive hit in Serie A. European giants such as Juventus, Liverpool and Roma are all interested in the 24-year-old who surely has a big career ahead of him.
Centre Midfield: Javier Zanetti (Inter) – The Nerazzurri captain has been consistently world class for more than a decade, and at the age of 34 he is showing no signs of slowing down. Inter may not be a very popular side at the moment, however I think you will struggle to find anyone who dislikes Il Trattore. Brilliant Player!
Centre Midfield: Daniele De Rossi (Roma) – Despite sitting in second position in the Serie A table, few Roma players have really stood out on an individual level. The Giallorossi, despite containing numerous great players, have shown a real team unity, and no one has held this together better than De Rossi. Surely the heir to Francesco Totti as the symbol of the club.
Centre Midfield: Esteban Cambiasso (Inter) – Undoubtedly the best defensive midfielder in world football currently. Cambiasso reminds me very much of Didier Deschamps during his pomp, and he has been just as crucial to Inter’s success this season, as the Frenchman was to Juventus’ triumphs during the Marcello Lippi years.
Trequartista: Cristiano Doni (Atalanta) – If we are talking about consistency then Doni is another player who has excelled over the years. The veteran is as prolific a goalscoring midfielder as Frank Lampard is in the English Premiership. The Italian has hit the back of the net seven times in 12 games and has been a key factor in Atalanta’s fine season so far.
Centre Forward: David Trezeguet (Juventus) – This selection was a no-brainer when you consider that Trezeguet has made the best start to a club season in his entire career. Undoubtedly the best finisher in world football at the moment, the fact that he cannot get into Raymond Domenech’s French squad is quite frankly an insult. With 13 goals, he is the Capocannonieri leader.
Centre Forward: Julio Cruz (Inter) – It was a straight battle out of Cruz and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the spot alongside Trezeguet, however the Argentine wins the fight. While Ibra has shown a tendency to under-perform in the big games, Cruz has produced his best during these matches, scoring against Juventus, Milan, Roma and Fiorentina. With 10 goals he is second top-scorer in the league behind Trezeguet.

Pasquale Marino's hopes of keeping the indefatigable performances of Gökhan Inler under wraps at Udinese Calcio have been spoiled after the Swiss youngster was voted
'Most important player'
Inler has been hugely impressive since moving to Italy from FC Zürich in June, with the Corriere della Sera newspaper describing him as "tactically the most important player at Udinese". Still just 23, Inler was ever-present in the first half of the season, refusing to be cowed by the atmosphere at grounds such as the San Siro and the Stadio Olympico and immediately catching the eye. "It's impressive how many kilometres he runs every match without losing his effectiveness in orchestrating Udinese's game," Rome daily Il Messaggero noted.
Prodigious talent
That the Olten-born player should achieve so much so soon will come as little surprise to those who have followed his career since his professional debut for FC Solothurn at the tender age of 16. He joined FC Basel 1893 the following year, where he honed his distinct style in the holding position, characterised by a no-nonsense attitude, powerful challenges and a thunderous long-distance shot. He failed to break into Basel's first team but, after transferring to FC Aarau and spending two seasons there, he was to have the last laugh when he switched to Zürich in 2006.
Long-term commitment
"My goal was to establish myself as a regular at FCZ in the short term and to be called up for the national team in the mid-term," explained Inler, who by now had chosen to represent Switzerland rather than his parents' homeland Turkey. "Then maybe one day I could move to one of Europe's big leagues." He did not have to wait long for that eventuality, and after collecting back-to-back titles with Zürich – at Basel's expense – he sealed a move to Udinese last summer, signing a five-year contract with the Friulani. Seven months in, and things are going to plan.

"I arrived with great enthusiasm and that has not changed," Inler said. "Playing for Udinese is a great opportunity for young players like me. Marino is glad to have him, if reluctant to highlight the midfielder's progress, explaining: "I prefer not to talk too much about Inler because then the big clubs will start to watch him closely."
Objectives
With Udinese riding fourth in Serie A at the halfway stage, those big clubs are certainly noticing the Zebrette, and with his personal prize secured, Swiss international Inler is hoping to maintain such forward momentum. "Nobody predicted we would do so well in the first part of the season," he said, a comment that could quite easily apply to his own displays. "My personal objective is to continue to improve and maybe score more goals in the future." Udinese's rivals have been warned.

Team of the week (4-3-3):
Matteo Sereni (Torino): Another excellent performance and clean sheet for the Granata goalkeeper. Has been in splendid form this year and would definitely deserve to be called-up as a back-up to Buffon.
Javier Zanetti (Inter): Always a joy to watch in his defensive and offensive duties. One of the Nerazzurri’s greatest captains ever.
Alessandro Nesta (Milan): Brilliant display by Nesta who was flawless and stopped the Parma forwards from causing any damage.
Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus): Risked scoring an own goal, but otherwise was simply majestic in defence as he annulled Totti.
Federico Balzaretti (Palermo): Since joining the Rosanero, he has been performing above all expectations. Maybe Juventus and Fiorentina are already regretting letting let him go.
Andrea Pirlo (Milan): As soon as he came on in the second half, the match changed in favour of the Rossoneri. Milan’s only irreplaceable player.
Zdravko Kuzmanovic (Fiorentina): Ran for the entire 90 minutes and even scored a goal in a game he will never forget.
Sebastian Giovinco (Empoli): Excellent display of quality and technical ability. Assists, entertaining moves and great movement: Italy’s brightest young player.
David Suazo (Inter): In splendid form as he scored his seventh goal of the season for Inter and is hoping to score even more at this current rate.
Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus): A lot of great work for the Bianconeri’s captain apart from scoring the match winning goal with one of his trademark free-kicks.
Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria): Simply sensational display by Cassano. Set-up Samp's winner in the Genoa derby after a nutmeg and a piece of glorious footwork, while he also created four other clear-cut chances with inspired through-balls. Brilliant!
