Doni (Roma): The Giallorossi can definitely count on the Brazilian goalkeeper who has come a long way since his arrival in the Italian Serie A league.



Nesta (Milan): Great performance by the central defender who was practically perfect. Donadoni will surely miss him against France.

Zapata (Udinese): If Inter failed to score a second goal against the Friulani, it was mostly due to Zapata’s brilliant defending. How come none of the big teams were after him this summer?

Mexes (Roma): With a Mexes like this, who needs Chivu? Defends well and scores often. Spalletti has no problems in defence.

Panucci (Roma): Despite the age, he still performing at his best and few can argue his qualities in the defensive phase. Maybe he can prove useful against France.



Rosina (Torino): What a goal to kick-off the new Serie A season! That is the reason why they call him ‘Rosinaldo’.

Kaka` (Milan): Started the season which will lead him to the Golden Ball award with a brace. He has become a true leader of the team and can bring more silverware to the Rossoneri.

Aquilani (Roma): Great start to the season for what can become one of Europe’s best midfielders if he keeps up the good work.



Iaquinta (Juventus): Came in as a substitute in the last half hour and helped the Bianconeri score 4 goals, including his own persona brace.

Trezeguet (Juventus): No wonder the Bianconeri wanted to hold on to him at all cost this past summer. A goal machine who will prove vital for the Old Lady’s return to Serie A.

Morimoto (Catania): The 19-year-old has been compared to Ronaldo in Japan and after Sunday’s goal, few will doubt his qualities. He also set up Baiocco for Catania’s second goal.

Serie A Team Of The Week: Round 2

Team of the week (4-3-3):

goalkeeper

Buffon (Juventus): He conceded two goals (from the penalty spot), but he also made some incredible saves which galvanized his team-mates. Spectacular.

Defenders:

Samuel (Inter): Great performance by the Inter defender who was practically perfect in his defensive duties, closing down all opponents. The Empoli forwards will be having nightmares about him this week.

Maicon (Inter): A lot of work on the wing, going up and down to help both in attack and in defence. The assist for the first goal arrived from him.

Barzagli (Palermo): Solid display by the Rosanero defender, who played an excellent match without too much hassle.

Mexes (Roma): Chivu will not be missed if the French defender continues performing constantly during the season. Yet another positive performance.


Middlefield

Foggia (Cagliari): Apart from the two scored penalties, the former Milan player proved his quality with great assists and passes all throughout the game. A player to watch out for.

Camoranesi (Juventus): Practically decided the game in favour of Juventus when he came in the second half as he was involved in all three goals of the Bianconeri. Will prove fundamental for the Old Lady’s aspirations this season.

Aquilani (Roma): What a match by this young midfielder who deservedly received a call-up by Donadoni for the clash against France. A goal, a goal-post and an assist, but also a lot of quantity during the entire game.


forwards:

Ibrahimovic (Inter): Always a pleasure to watch with his moves. And when he scores (2 goals in this case) then those are just the cherry on top of his performance.

Miccoli (Palermo): This is why they call him the Italian Romario. Two goals and an assist for the former Juventus player who can reach his best form this season unless of his usual injuries slows him down.

Lavezzi (Napoli): What a surprise! This player is in line for best newcomer of the season if his first two matches are an indication. 3 goals during the Coppa Italia game and a goal and lot of dribbling, assists and spectacular moves against Udinese. Brilliant purchase for Napoli.

Team of the week (4-3-3):

Julio Cesar (Inter): After limiting Fenerbahce to a 1-0 win, the Brazilian goalkeeper saved Inter from suffering an embarrassing defeat against what was considered the weakest side in Serie A. Inter cannot do without him.

Cristian Valencia Zapata (Udinese): Another brilliant performance for the Friulani’s central defender who is also tipped to join Juventus either in January or by the end of the season.

Leonardo Jose Talamonti (Atalanta): Saved the Bergamaschi twice in the first half before leaving the pitch midway through the second period due to injury.

Cristian Zaccardo (Palermo): Very solid in defence, but more importantly awarded the Rosanero three precious points with a good goal in the first half.

Fabio Galante (Livorno): Marked Adriano out of the game, and when the Brazilian could have score, Galante managed to clear the ball from the goal line.

Andrea Pirlo (Milan): Even though the Rossoneri were far from perfect, Pirlo still managed to illuminate San Siro with his inch perfect passes. He will not win the Golden Ball, but surely deserves a lot of recognition.

Stefano Morrone (Parma): Great match for the Italian midfielder who put in a lot of quantity in his performance, even though he made a lot of fouls in the middle of the pitch.

Giulio Migliaccio (Palermo): An interesting player which all big teams should keep an eye on. Wonderful assist for Zaccardo and great control of the midfield.

Antonio Di Natale (Udinese): His scoring vein continues with two gems against Reggina that send Udinese flying high in the standings.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter): The Nerazzurri’s most important player right now thanks to his current form. Very decisive, but Roberto Mancini should be worried that at the end of the day Inter’s fortunes depend on the Swedish player only.

Francesco Totti (Roma): Another two goals to add to Totti’s impressive tally. Very impressive yet again and this might be the season he leads Roma to the Scudetto once more.

Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus): Still the number one goalkeeper in the world as both Recoba and Ventola can testify.

Cesar (Inter): Great work on the wing both offensively and defensively for a player who is returning to his best form this season.

Ivan Cordoba (Inter): Inter’s solid defence is mostly due to the Colombian defender who has been the Nerazzurri’s best defender in this early part of the season.

Per Billeskov Kroldrup (Fiorentina): Very good performance of the Danish defender who kept the Livorno forwards at bay.

Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus): His performances are making sure that the Bianconeri are not missing Andrade. At least till January he will be very important in Claudio Ranieri’s rearguard.

Esteban Cambiasso (Inter): Managed to combine both quantity and quality against Roma. A player Mancini can always rely on.

Mario Alberto Santana (Fiorentina): Two assists and a goal turned him into the man of the match as the Viola have re-discovered an important element.

Ighli Vannucchi (Empoli): The mind behind the Tuscan team’s win against Palermo as the Italian midfielder led his side with his tactical intelligence and great creative flair.

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo (Fiorentina): He does not like to be compared to Batistuta, but few players can boast of scoring two goals on their debut. A future star.

David Trezeguet (Juventus): Anonymous for 92 minutes, but then hit home the match winner. A striker which all coaches would love to have: deadly finisher.

Vincenzo Montella (Sampdoria): An assist and an unfairly disallowed goal. The airplane is still flying high despite the age and a lot more will come from him this season.

Ivan Cordoba (Inter): The perfect defender thanks to his anticipation skills and his speed which make him one of the best defenders in Serie A.

Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus): Excellent game by the young defender who practically cancelled Pazzini out of the game.

Daniele Bonera (Milan): Very commanding display in defence as he denied the Lazio strikers from every shooting towards goal except for the conceded goal which was not his fault.

Moris Carrozzieri (Atalanta): Very energetic display by the Bergamaschi’s defender who did not give any space to his opponents as he helped Atalanta keep a clean sheet.

Massimo Ambrosini(Milan): A great goal (though probably unintentional) and also a great assist for Gilardino. A true leader.

Riccardo Kaka` (Milan): Two goals and an assist for the Brazilian ace who was once again devastating when going forward.

Fabio Simplicio (Palermo): Wonderful performance for the midfielder of the Rosanero who lead the midfield of the Sicilian side with great authority.

Julio Cruz (Inter): Incredible goal scoring rate of 1 goal every 68 minutes played. Any team in the world would love to have this striker in their ranks.

Francesco Totti (Roma): Usual spectacular display by the Roma captain who also scored a brace and offered an assist to Mancini.

Alberto Gilardino (Milan): Finally found the net again as he scored two goals against Lazio and could have easily scored more if he was not so wasteful.

Serie A Team Of The Week: Round 8

Balli (Empoli): Ambrosini and Inzaghi still regret the opportunities they missed thanks to a great Balli who saved the Tuscan side whenever he was called in action.

Cordoba (Inter): Great start to the season for the Colombian defender who plays one excellent game after another for the Nerazzurri.

Pasqual (Fiorentina): Good push forward on the wing, sending out some pin pointed crosses towards the middle, but also diligent work in the defensive department.

Siviglia (Lazio): The Biancocelesti cannot do without him, and his return following the injury is a major boost for the Roman club ahead of their next delicate clashes in Serie A and the Champions League.

Legrottaglie (Juventus): Juve fans will be happy that Legro has returned to his best form (Chievo days), considering the poor start of the season for the Bianconeri's rearguard.

Hamsik (Napoli): One of the best players on the pitch in that humdinger of a match against Roma.

Semioli (Fiorentina): An all-round midfield display as the Viola showed their class against Siena.

Totti (Roma): Scored from the penalty, but more importantly he masterminded all the Roma attacks. Despite being over 30, he is still brilliant.

Pazzini (Fiorentina): Goals and assists for the young forward who was the best player for the Viola on Sunday, thus forming an excellent partnership with Mutu upfront.

Del Piero (Juventus): The new contract seemed to have revived him as he scored a technically great goal and played a very good game overall.

Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli): Was inpirational on the pitch as fearless Napoli responded to Roma, blow for blow, eventually coming away with a very credible 4-4 draw.

Team of the week:

Marco Ballotta (Lazio): Four great saves by the ‘grandad’ of all goalkeepers were not enough for the Biancocelesti to avoid defeat. Eternal player.

Maurizio Domizzi (Napoli): Perfect in defence, anticipating the Juve forwards in every circumstance. Then to top it all off, scoring two goals (albeit from the penalty spot) to the best goalkeeper in the world is something to be proud of.

Cicinho (Roma): Finally he proved his worth after a difficult start to the season. Great game running up and down the right flank and proving decisive in his cross for Vucinic’s goal.

Juan (Roma): Wonderful performance of the Brazilian who neutralized Kaka with ease thanks to some well executed tackles.

Walter Samuel (Inter): Back to his best like his Roma days, with every opponent finding it impossible to get past him. No wonder they call him ‘the wall’.

Walter Gargano (Napoli): Quantity and quality for the team, including the Partenopei’s equalizer which paved the way for Napoli’s win over Juventus.

Domenico Morfeo (Parma): Changed the game in favour of the Crociati with his entrance after the break. Great assists and more importantly scored the winning goal to award Parma with three precious points.

Julio Leon (Genoa): A man of the match performance by the Grifoni’s midfielder, who masterminded all the Rossoblu attacks, showing of all of his qualities.

Mirko Vucinic (Roma): Missed a good opportunity in the first half, but then redeemed himself in the second half. His second decisive goal in the space of 4 days; Totti can recover without any hurry.

Francesco Tavano (Livorno): Finally he’s back. Following a very poor start to the season, the former Empoli forward showed his class and technical abilities against Parma, thanks to two goals and a lot of good effort.

Asamoah Gyan (Udinese): Third time lucky for the Bianconeri’s attacker, as after seeing Ballotta save two shots in the first half, Gyan managed to slot in his third try and send Udinese flying.

Team of the week (4-3-3):

Gigi Buffon (Juventus): Not too many saves, but all decisive as they allowed the Bianconeri to remain in the game when the score was still 1-0 for Inter.

Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus): The main reason why Ibrahimovic failed to do anything on Sunday evening. A warrior without fear.

Ivan Cordoba (Inter): The Colombian defender cancelled Del Piero out of the game as he continues his excellent start to the season.

Abdoulay Konko (Genoa): Despite his side suffering three goals, he had an incredible game and will surely become the target of many big teams in the near future. He also assisted Boriello for his goal and tried his luck from the distance.

Fabio Galante (Livorno): Since Camolese took over, it was like he went through a re-birth and now he has become one of the most consistent Serie A defenders of the past month.

Mauro German Camoranesi (Juventus): Played final 20 minutes, but in those few minutes he did so much more than Del Piero did in the other 70 minutes. The Bianconeri fans are happy to see him back.

Mancini (Roma): Incredible first half by the Roma player who caused havoc in the Empoli defence throughout the first 45 minutes. He decreased in the second half, but was still a constant threat for his opponents.

Antonio Langella (Atalanta): A brace for the former Cagliari player who paved the way for another Atalanta win in their high-flying season.

Julio Cesar Leon (Genoa): Wonderful player who can turn the game in your favour at any point of the match. Genoa have a real gem in their hands.

Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli): Another important performance for the heir of Maradona as he scored the deserved equalizer for the Partenopei. How come no one knew about him before he joined Napoli?

Julio Cruz (Inter): Did not do much really, just one shot on goal, but that was enough to score yet again against the Bianconeri and Buffon (his two favourite targets) and help Inter maintain their lead at the top over their hate rivals.

Luca Castellazzi (Sampdoria): Great second half by the Sampdoria goalkeeper who superbly blocked all the Empoli shots on goal, thus denying the Tuscan side from even scoring a consolation goal.

Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus): The Bianconeri’s brightest light in defence who still have the habit of scoring decisive goals.

Christian Maggio (Sampdoria): What a day for the Blucerchiati’s wingback who contributed in two of his side’s goals. Very impressive when going forward, but also very solid when defending.

Salvatore Aronica (Reggina): Brilliant display by the Reggio Calabria defender who stopped all attacks by the Genoa forward thus resulting important for Reggina’s precious home win.

Fabio Galante (Livorno): Always sure and confident in defence, proving to be a great leader for his team even when things were not going as well as they are now.

Andrea Gasbarroni (Parma): Uncatchable by the Juventus defence during the entire game. Also scored the penalty with which the Crociati took the lead.

Mauro German Camoranesi (Juventus): The Bianconeri’s best midfielder who tried (in vain) in the first half to liven up the Old Lady’s pace in midfield and attack.

Giovanni Tedesco (Palermo): A brace for the veteran midfielder who overturned the result in favour of the Rosanero and helped the Sicilian side win the first game after 5 winless rounds.

Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus): Once again proving to be more decisive and in-form than Del Piero. Deserves to be in the first eleven.

Nicola Amoruso (Reggina): Great goal in his 300th Serie A game of his career. Reggina will need his goals more than anything else in order to survive in the Italian topflight again.

Francesco Tavano (Livorno): The Camolese cure is doing wonders to the former Empoli player. After a very poor start to the season, Tavano has become an important element in Livorno’s resurgence.

Luca Bucci (Parma): He would have had a perfect game if he had saved Firmani’s shot, but despite conceding that late goal, the Crociati's goalkeeper was excellent during the entire match and made some brilliant saves.

Christian Panucci (Roma): Sense of 'déjà-vu' for the full-back who scored a carbon copy goal of the one he netted for Italy a week before. Decisive yet again, despite his age.

Walter Samuel (Inter): The wall in the Nerazzurri’s defence as the Argentinean player was practically unbeatable in the middle of the back four.

Domenico Criscito (Juventus): After some disappointing games, the young Bianconeri’s defender proved why he is considered as Italy’s most promising central defender. Perfect game with no mistakes.

Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus): Just like his team-mate Criscito, he had a perfect game at the centre of the Old Lady’s defence. Maybe he deserves a call-up to the Azzurri squad.

Pasquale Foggia (Cagliari): Milan let him go some years ago as they did not believe in him. Yesterday’s game proved that the Rossoneri were wrong in doing so and Cagliari can thank them for the ‘present’.

Pavel Nedved (Juventus): Did not score, but was unstoppable during the entire game which reminded us of the Czech player who won the Golden Ball award a few years ago. The Olimpico crowd chanted his name before Del Piero stepped up to take the penalty. He would have definitely deserved that honour.

Fabio Firmani (Lazio): Quality and quantity for the Biancoceleste midfielder who also crowned his performance with a goal that won his side three precious points.

David Suazo (Inter): Finally the Suazo we had admired in previous years at Cagliari showed his class for the Nerazzurri thanks to a superlative performance that included some great moves, a goal and a half-assist.

Marcelo Zalayeta (Napoli): Unstoppable for the Catania defence as they failed to hold the former Juventus player from scoring a brace to increase his season tally to six goals.

Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus): Maybe Del Piero scored twice, but Iaquinta was still incredible on Sunday evening and deserves a starting position in this Juve side alongside Trezeguet. Has already scored more goals this season than he did last year.

Alessandro Nesta (Milan): The San Siro applauded his performance as the Rossoneri veteran still continues to be one of the best defenders out there.

Walter Samuel (Inter): Perfect defending against the Viola strikers. It will be difficult for Materazzi to reclaim his first team place.

Juan (Roma): Does not make any mistakes in defence and then helps out the attack whenever there is the need: indeed, he scored the opening goal for the Giallorossi.

Moris Carrozzieri (Atalanta): Very important for the Bergamaschi’s defence; apart from being solid, he is also quite spectacular in his defensive duties. A joy to watch.

Andrea Pirlo (Milan): He finished fifth in the Golden Ball race, but fact is that he is the number one player in his role. There’s no one like him in Serie A, or in any other league.

Luis Antonio Jimenez (Inter): Only played because of Stankovic’s injury, but that was good luck for both him and Inter as he played a wonderful game, scoring against his former team.

Cristiano Doni (Atlanta): Still going on strong and claiming a place in the next Euro 2008 squad with assists and goals in every game.

Julio Cruz (Inter): What can you say about a player who always scores whenever he plays? Ruthless finisher.

Claudio Bellucci (Sampdoria): The Marassi stadium gave him a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the game. Two goals, two other important goal scoring opportunities and many assists led him to the man of the match award.

Goran Pandev (Lazio): Scored a goal, but more importantly he worked hard for the team. The Macedonian was always trying to pass the ball to his comrades, which many felt was a weakness in his game before.
