This week's best line up in a 3-5-2, after some superb midfield displays dominated proceedings.(GOAL.COM)

Goalkeeper
1 Gorka Iraizoz (Athletic Bilbao): The Basque custodian was simply on fire against Osasuna, repeatedly denying the likes of Pandiani and Portillo to earn Athletic a hard-fought draw at San Mames.

Defenders

2 Sregio Ramos (Real Madrid): The former Sevilla man was bombing up the right at every opportunity, and was dominant in the air at both ends of the pitch. Continues to improve!

3 Pascal Cygan (Villarreal): The Frenchman was solid as a rock against Valencia, who played some pretty spectacular football until David Villa got himself sent off in the 38th minute. After that, Manuel Pellegrini threw men forward, leaving him to keep it tight at the back.

4 Ezequiel Garay (Racing Santander): The young Argentine defender was the class of El Sardinero on Sunday evening, making the likes of Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry look really average.

Midfielders

5 Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid): For the second week in a row, the Dutchman was absolutely superb with his deliveries into the box. Every time he sent a ball in, Atleti looked stretched to deal with it. He showed he can pass it on the ground as well, and as for his ability to strike the ball, there could have been no better a promotion.

6 Ariel Ibagaza (Real Mallorca): My player of the week! The former Atletico Madrid man ripped Levante to shreds with his creativity. The underrated midfielder got himself two exquisite goals, and helped set up Daniel Guiza for a third as Mallorca ran riot.

7 Pablo Garcia (Real Murcia): The former Osasuna, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo defender used his La Liga experience to lead lowly Murcia to a shock win over Real Zaragoza. Was an absolute rock against the likes of Aimar, and also set up one of his team's two goals.

8 Santi Cazorla (Villarreal): Back from his spell at Recreativo, the midfielder was an absolute dynamite against Valencia, running the show at the Mestalla as Villarreal triumphed 3-0. A deserved goal to show for his efforts.

9 Duda (Sevilla): Sevilla sparked into life the moment he was brought on, albeit in unfortunate circumstances following Puerta's shocking collapse. Getafe may have been down to nine men, but with all nine behind the ball, proved tricky to break down until he started delivering one ball after another from the left. A man-of-the-match performance as he helped set up three of the four goals.

Strikers

10 Raul (Real Madrid): The Merengue skipper rolled back the years to silence doubters with an inspirational display. The veteran sparked off Madrid's comeback with a trademark header, and looked dangerous throughout.

11 Negredo (Almeria): This 22-year-old Madrid born striker was the biggest surprise of the weekend. Moved superbly up front, held the ball up even better, finished clinically, and set up team-mates unselfishly to doom Deportivo to a 3-0 home defeat.

La Liga Team Of The Week: Round 2

Goalkeepers

1 Toño (Racing Santander): The 27-year-old Racing custodian was the star of the show in La Romareda on Saturday evening, repeatedly frustrating the likes of Ricardo Oliveira, Diego Milito and Pablo Aimar. That Racing came away with a point despite some serious pressure was largely due to his reflexes.

Defenders

2 Ballesteros (Real Mallorca): It was always going to be tricky against the likes of Forlan, Aguero and Simao in the Vicente Calderon, but Ballesteros marshalled the defence with great maturity to frustrate Javier Aguire despite his team enjoying 70% of the possession.

3 Alvaro (Levante): The 29-year-old Brazilian was as solid as a rock for minnows Levante, keeping the irrepressible Fernando Baiano in his pocket from start to finish as his team managed to shut out a superior Real Murcia side.

4 Metzelder (Real Madrid): Real Madrid might have eventually hit five, but it was this big German defender who kept them in the game during the first 30 minutes, when Villarreal were on song. Don't be surprised if he clinches a starting spot ahead of the higher profiled Pepe.

5 Abidal (Barcelona): The Frenchman had a good game even as Barcelona slowed down in the second half, and was the most consistent player on the pitch over 90 minutes. In him and Zambrotta, Barca may finally have two full-backs Frank Rijkaard can count on to deliver under pressure.

Midfielders

6 Sneijder (Real Madrid): The Dutchman is the only player who makes it into the elite eleven for the second week in a row. As if a couple of midfield displays were not enough, he is also the sole leader in the Pichichi charts, having scored thrice in two games. A quality free-kick, and an even better second with the outside of his foot were but the highlights! Could just be the signing of the summer in Spain!

7 Borja Fernandez (Valladolid): The 25-year-old defensive midfielder stamped his authority on the game, making the usually rugged Deportivo look soft and uncomfortable. A traditional anchorman's display.

8 Guti (Real Madrid): His attitude may be called into question under pressure, but when Real Madrid are in their opponents' half and passing their way around, there are few who can be as easy on the eye as this 31-year-old midfielder. Much of Madrid's second half domination was down to him.

9 D'Alessandro (Real Zaragoza): The Argentine was in good form Racing from start to finish, though not helped by some lacklustre displays around him. Milito and Oliveira failed to finish, Aimar drifted in and out of the game, and Movilla was missed solerly in midfield. A quality display from the play-maker, nonetheless.

Forwards

10 Ronaldinho (Barcelona): When the Brazilian superstar starts curling free-kicks into the net, you know he is in form. That was just the way it was against Athletic Bilbao. He ran the show, particularly during Barcelona's strong first half display.

11 Luis Garcia (Espanyol): The former Murcia and Mallorca man ripped through Real Betis with two clinical strikes. A pity his defenders threw it all away in the final ten minutes.

....................Toño

Ballesteros Alvaro Metzelder Abidal

Sneijder Borja Guti D'Alessandro

...................Luis Garcia Ronaldinho

Honourable Mentions

It was a superb collective effort from Real Madrid, be it Sergio Ramos on the right, Casillas in goal, a no-nonsense Diarra in midfield, or Raul and Van Nistelrooy up front. In fact, it is difficult to leave anyone out.

Apart from Ramos and Raul, two more from among last week's picks were in form. Ariel Ibagaza (Mallorca) did well against former club Atletico, and Negredo (Almeria) impressed against a quality Valencia side. Other strikers who impressed were Fernando Morientes (Valencia) and Rafael Sobis (Real Betis).

In the middle of the pitch, you would have to mention Yaya Toure, who had a positive outing for Barcelona, and David Odonkor (Real Betis), who finally showed what he can do on his day. To spare a thought for hapless Villarreal, Santi Cazorla was one of the few Yellow Submatrines who kept going against the odds.

In defence, Ezequiel Garay (Racing), Curro Torres and Alvaro Mejia (both Murcia) all deserve mention. Miguel Moya (Real Mallorca) and Marco Storari (Levante) made an impression between the posts.

İSPANYA LA LIGA WEEK 4

All that results in a rather attacking 4-1-3-2 formation this week.

Goalkeepers

1 Cobeño (Almeria): The 25-year-old turned in save after save to deny the likes of Guiza, Arango and Ibagaza, and earn Almeria an invaluable point against a superior Real Mallorca.

Defenders

2 Miguel (Valencia): Was the best player on the pitch by a country mile. A blitzkrieg of a display on Valencia's right to inspire them to a difficult win at Betis, and to within a point of leaders Real Madrid.

3 Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid): The only shining light for Madrid in what was otherwise a rather shambolic display against Valladolid. With Pepe and Metzelder out, and Cannavaro looking jaded, it was up to him to rescue Los Merengues with some authoritative and some last gasp defending.

4 Sergio Fernandez (Real Zaragoza): With Milito gone and Ayala yet to settle in completely, a lot of the defensive responsibility has fallen on the 30-year-old's shoulders, and he has been fulfilling them diligently. Had Walter Pandiani in his pocket as Zaragoza picked up their first win of the season.

5 Eric Abidal (Barcelona): The Frenchman had his best game in a Barcelona shirt yet. That it came against the dangerous Sevilla and involved keeping both Jesus Navas and Daniel Alves quiet, makes it that much more special. Did a fair bit going forward too!

Midfielders

6 Jose Antonio Reyes (Atletico Madrid): The winger started a La Liga game after quite some time, and had a telling impact. Played a part in three of the goals as Atleti routed Racing 4-0, and received a standing ovation from the Vicente Calderon faithful for his efforts.

7 Borja Fernandez (Real Valladolid): The 25-year-old former Real Madrid man was on fire for the third round in a row, this time against none other than Los Merengues themselves. With Wesley Sneijder's absence sticking out like a sore thumb for Madrid, the middle of the pitch was all his.

8 Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid): More than being on the scoresheet, it was his participation in Atleti's passing, his understanding with Reyes, Simao, Raul Garcia and Forlan around him, and his ability to skip past markers and create something out of nothing that stood out. The 'Kun' could well be the new Colchonero talisman!

9 Lionel Messi (Barcelona): What can you say about this boy? It is not just his ability that is catching the eye in almost every single game, but the sheer freedom of spirit he brings onto the pitch. Caused Dragutinovic and Sevilla problems throughout the game, and got just reward in the form of two winning goals.

Forwards

10 Guiseppe Rossi (Villarreal): It looked like a very tricky match against Murcia, until the introduction of Rossi on the hour mark. The Italian helped the Submarines explode into life, and scored twice to guide his team to a 2-0 win, and, would you believe it, second spot in the La Liga standings!

11 Javi Guerrero (Recreativo Huelva): Espanyol seemed to have done the hard work when Guerrero, shouldering much of the responsibility in Sinama-Pongolle's absence, upped the ante, scoring twice to help his team come from behind and secure a superb win over the Catalans.

......................Cobeño

Miguel Ramos Sergio Abidal

.........................Borja

..........Messi.......Aguero........Reyes

..............Guerrero.....Rossi

Honourable Mentions

Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao) is the first player who needs to be mentioned here, missing out despite a brace against Levante. That it came against the weakest team in Spain sees him pipped to the post. Diego Milito (Real Zaragoza) was another man who threatened to rediscover some of his form from last season.

For Barcelona, Yaya Toure had a very impressive game negating Sevilla's physical superiority, and Gabriel Milito was simply all over Kanoute. But for Oleguer's late effort, it would have been another clean sheet!

The likes of Joaquin (Valencia), Raul Garcia (Atletico Madrid), Josico (Villarreal) and Matuzalem (Real Zaragoza) deserve mention in midfield, while at the back, Pedro Lopez (Valladolid), Pascal Cygan (Villarreal) and Jose Martin Caceres (Recreativo Huelva) all made an impact.

Player of the Week: Lionel Messi

Club of the Week: Atletico Madrid

İSPANYA LA LIGA WEEK 7

Goal.com  GÖRE

Barcelona and Real Zaragoza were the big winners this week, picking up 3-0 home wins over Atletico Madrid and Levante respectively, with Lionel Messi and Ricardo Oliveira starring.

The shocks of the week were delivered at the Mestalla and the Sanchez Pizjuan, Espanyol defeating Valencia 2-1, and Deportivo pipping Sevilla 1-0.

Racing Santander and Real Madrid come next, both picking up 2-0 wins. Real Mallorca also triumphed by two goals, coming from behind thanks to another inspired display from Juan Arango.

Second placed Villarreal dropped to third, going down 2-3 to Osasuna at the Reyno de Navarra.

The final two games of the week saw Athletic Bilbao held at home by Almeria, and Betis pick up a point in Murcia. This week's best line up in a 4-3-3.

Goalkeeper

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid): The Spanish international did what he does best - bail Real Madrid out of tight spots that they managed to squeeze themselves into now and again.

Defenders

Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid): Los Merengues may have kept a clean sheet, but there were quite a few mistakes from both Fabio Cannavaro and Gabriel Heinze. Ramos, however, was solid both in defence and in attack, as much with his movement as his aerial prowess.

Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo): The Argentine helped his side to a shock away win over Sevilla, keeping a clean sheet with an inspired display against the likes of Kanoute and Kone.

Gabriel Milito (Barcelona): Simply put, had Diego Forlan in his pocket. Barcelona finally have both Puyol and Milito fit together, and the effects were there to be seen against a side who had scored almost twenty goals in five games.

Juanfran (Zaragoza): The 31-year-old left-back conributed at both ends of the pitch in what was eventually a thumping win over Levante.

Defensive Midfielders

Javi Garcia (Osasuna): The former Real Madrid youngster let glimpse his enormous potential against Pires, Senna and Co., putting up an impressive midfield display and chipping in with the match-winner against then second-placed Villarreal.

Alberto Zapater (Zaragoza): The oft-under-rated midfielder was solid as a rock, allowing his forwards to go on the rampage against Levante.

Alberto Riera (Espanyol): Was the star of Espanyol's show at the Mestalla, one that saw them come from behind in style. Stunning goals from midfield are becoming a habit for him, and it's fifth place and rising for Ernesto Valverde's Uefa Cup finalists.

Forwards

Lionel Messi (Barcelona): He simply will not be left out. Was once again the star of Barcelona's show, setting up the first and scoring the second as Barca blew Atletico Madrid to smithereens. The sole leader in the Pichichi race, with six goals from seven games!

Ricardo Oliveira (Real Zaragoza): Victor Fernandez's boys were always in a battle against Levante, until the Brazilian came on and settled the game with two spectacular goals.

Juan Arango (Real Mallorca): Inspired his team - down to ten men against Getafe - to come from behind and pick up a memorable 4-2 win. His brace takes his goalscoring tally to four for the season.

.......................Casillas

Ramos Coloccini Milito Juanfran

......Javi Garcia Zapater Riera

.......... Messi Oliveira Arango

Honourable Mention

Marcelo, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder had good games for Real Madrid, with Henry, Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Xavi and Deco all impressing against Atletico Madrid in Barca's most complete display yet this season.

Luis Garcia (Espanyol) and Riki (Deportivo) turned out to be the giant-killers of the weekend, sending Valencia and Sevilla to respective defeats.

Getafe midfielder Francisco David Sousa scored twice against Mallorca, though it all went in vain as his team crumpled to a 4-2 defeat. Ruben Baraja (Valencia) was another player who impressed in a lost cause.

In goal Timo Hildebrand almost kept Valencia from defeat with his string of saves, while Betis goalkeeper Ricardo repeatedly denied Fernando Baiano.

In defence, former Madrid men Carlos Diogo (Zaragoza) and Alvaro Mejia (Murcia) were both in good form, was was former Barca man Damia Abella (Betis). Argentines Roberto Ayala (Zaragoza) and Ezequiel Garay (Racing) also led their respective defenses to clean sheets.

La Liga Team Of The Week: Round 8

This week's best line up in a 4-4-2.

Goalkeepers

Cobeño (Almeria): A string of fine saves to deny the likes of Javier Portillo and Juanfran as Alemria picked up their first home win of the season.

Defenders

Khalid Boulahrouz (Sevilla): The Chelsea discard has redicsovered his form in Spain, and is now making the most of injuries to Javi Navarro and Julien Escude.

Pascal Cygan (Villarreal): A leader's display against stalwarts like Henry and Messi to help Villarreal hand on to their lead against Barcelona. The Catalans failed to make an impression despite having seven attacking players on the pitch at one time.

Daniel Jarque (Espanyol): Solid as a rock against the Real Madrid attack, one that looked increasingly toothless as the game went on. By some distance the best defensive display in Spain this week.

Mariano Pernia (Atletico Madrid): Made some exciting contributions in attack as Atleti hit four, all the while keeping Pablo Aimar on a short leash.

Midfielders

Joaquin Sanchez (Valencia): The star of Valencia's four-goal display, causing havoc on the right throughout as Los Che went second with a fine win over Deportivo.

Maxi Rodriguez (Atletico Madrid): The versatile midfielder/forward showed once again that he is well capable of holding down a spot ahead of Simao and Reyes, scoring twice in Atleti's mauling of Zaragoza.

Robert Pires (Villarreal): An absolutley timeless display against Barcelona, who did not know what hit them. Left absolutley no doubts in anyone's mind that he has plenty more to offer to football.

Alberto Riera (Espanyol): The tall winger had ten scouts watching him, and failed to disappoint, almost every Espanyol attack involving him in one way or the other.

Strikers

Fernando Morientes (Valencia): The former Madrid and Liverpool man has been inconsistent this season, but roared into top form with two match-winning goals against Deportivo.

Raul Tamudo (Espanyol): Scored just the one goal, but was absolutely sensational from start to finish as Fabio Cannavaro and Christoph Metzelder were made to look like a couple of amateurs.

..........................Cobeño

Boulahrouz Cygan Jarque Pernia

Joaquin Maxi Pires Riera

.........Morientes Tamudo

Honourable Mentions

Santi Cazorla, Diego Forlan, Luis Fabiano, Manu del Moral, Marcos Senna, Guille Franco, Felipe Melo, Negredo, David Belenguer, Aritz Aduriz, Borja Valero, Daniel Guiza

Goalkeeper

David Cobeño (Almeria): The 25-year-old Madrid born man makes the list for the third time this season, this time for producing a number of quality saves against Barcelona. Made himself big, covered his angles, and made sure the Catalans did not have it easy.

Defenders

Roberto Ayala (Zaragoza): While Valencia were conceding left and right in Seville, the Argentine veteran was at his very best against Villarreal, the team he spent one month with this summer. Amedeo Carboni's decision to not hand him a new contract has hit Los Che hard.

Ezequiel Garay (Racing Santander): Another supremely mature display from the youngster as Racing moved up into eighth place with a 2-0 win over Getafe, after withstanding some very serious pressure.

Pablo Ibañez (Atletico Madrid): The Spanish international has had a dip in form over the last 12 months, but seems to be turning it around again. Kept it clean for his team as Levante went for broke.

Midfielders

Oscar Serrano (Racing Santander): Was the man of the match at El Sardinero after master-minding his team's 2-0 win. Getafe had no answer to his understanding with Pedro Munitis.

Seydou Keita (Sevilla): The man who made it happen for Sevilla. Blanked Baraja and Albelda out of the game, ensuring that the likes of Poulsen, Navas and Adriano ran the show.

Guti (Real Madrid): Did not have the most consistent of games, but to be honest, he is not quite known for that. He produced two breath-taking passes when it mattered most to keep Real Madrid on top in La Liga.

Christian Poulsen (Sevilla): Keita's partner in the middle. Played a slightly more attacking role, but his work-ethic was just as good. Was denied a goal in the first half, but scored deservedly in the second to drive the final nail into Flores' coffin.

Oscar Gonzalez (Zaragoza): The winger has been limited to substitute roles over the last 12 months, but with D'Alessandro and Aimar relegated to the bench, decided to show what he was all about. By some distance the best player in that 4-1 thrashing of Villarreal.

Strikers

Luis Fabiano (Sevilla): The Brazilian had one of those evenings on which everything he touched turned into goals. Ripped Valencia to shreds with two sublime assists and a goal.

Dady (Osasuna): The Pampalona side were struggling, two goals in arrears, when the 26-year-old Cape Verde born striker came on and turned the match on it's head. Two super-strikes to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.

..................Cobeño

........Ayala Garay Pablo

Oscar S Keita Poulsen Oscar G

........................Guti

...............Fabiano Dady

Honourable Mentions

There were some good defensive displays from Gabriel Milito (Barcelona), Paco Pavon (Zaragoza) and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid).

At the other end, Robinho (Real Madrid) turned around a poor first half to factor in the win, and Raul was hugely effective coming off the bench. Pedro Munitis (Racing), however, is the unluckiest to miss out after his show against Getafe.

As for Sevilla and Zaragoza players, you could go on and on. Peter Luccin, Ricardo Oliveira, Jesus Navas, Frederic Kanoute, Daniel Alves - they were all excellent.

Juan Arango (Mallorca) played well again, though his effort was undermined by an own goal. Albert Riera (Espanyol) did well in the same game, forcing that own goal, and later helping set up Tamudo.

Goalkeeper

Victor Valdes (Barcelona): Was the only Barca player who could have walked off the Valladolid pitch with his head held high. But for at least six quality saves from him, there is no telling what fate Frank Rijkaard's boys might have met with.

Defenders

Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid): What can you say about him! He has been the most consistent defender in Spain this season, and continues to improve both defensively and offensively. Another complete display.

Rafa (Real Valladolid): Officially known as Rafael Lopez Gomez, the 22-year-old Spaniard had the game of his life against Barcelona. He was always on the limit, and over it a few times, but got the job done. Ronaldinho, Messi, Krkic - nobody got past him.

Lucas Matias Licht (Getafe): A quality display against the pace, guile and experience of Joseba Etxeberria as Laudrup's boys pulled off a deserved win over Athletic Bilbao.

Midfielders

Maxi Rodriguez (Atletico Madrid): One is tempted to pick the strikers from a seven goal thriller, but it was the Argentine who impressed most after being handed a start ahead of Jose Antonio Reyes and Simao Sabrosa. That he scored the all-important fifth goal hardly hurt his cause.

Casquero (Getafe): The battle-scarred 31-year old had a stellar season under Schuster last time around, and is now beginning to lead their renaissance under Laudrup. Kept Orbaiz and Iraola very quiet, and came up with the all-important first goal.

Jonathan Sesma (Real Valladolid): Pulled the strings in the middle of the pitch for large parts of the game, practically blanking Iniesta out, and making the Barcelona rearguard look very ordinary more than a few times. Could have and should have scored the match-winner.

Guti (Real Madrid): Ran the show against Valencia, with due support from Diarra and Gago, both of whom deserve as much of a mention. That Los Che inexplicably fielded five offensive players in front of Albelda hardly hurt.

Forwards

Robinho (Real Madrid): Consistency had been his problem last season, one which he is close to overcoming. Or so it seems on the back of three telling contributions, against Olympiakos, Deportivo and now Valencia. Miguel simply did not know what hit him. Neither did Valencia.

Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid): Scored two more to take his season's tally up to eight (five in La Liga), but impressed just as much with his movement. Was always running into dangerous positions, and was found hogging the attention of some Valencia player in all the other goals.

Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal): The former Manchester United and Parma man makes the list for the third time this season after impressing against local rivals Levante. Chipped in with a goal as Villarreal went joint second with a 3-0 win. Six goals put him second behind Messi in the 'Pichichi' race.

Valdes

Ramos Rafa Licht

Maxi Sesma Casquero Guti

Rossi Van Nistelrooy Robinho

Honourable Mentions

Diarra and Gago have already been mentioned, but pretty much the entire Madrid cast deserves credit for a perfect outing. Except Metzelder, maybe.

Them apart, in attack, Daniel Guiza was again in goalscoring form as Mallorca went eighth. He joined Rossi on six goals, as did Luis Fabiano with a brace against Atletico, albeit in a losing cause. Osasuna strikers Dady and Carlos Vela hammered Betis, while Uche (Getafe) starred against Athletic.

There were a eight clean sheets across the league, and a number of quality defensive performances. The likes of Pascal Cygan (Villarreal), Cesar Cruchaga (Osasuna), Mario (Getafe), Daniel Jarque (Espanyol) and Alvaro Mejia (Real Murcia) all accomplished themselves well.

In midfield, Felipe Melo (Almeria) produced the goods in a losing display, while Jose Andres Guardado (Deportivo) turned match-winner, giving us a few flimpses of his potential.

Goalkeeper

Toño (Racing Santander): A man of the match display to earn Racing a valuable away win against Depor.

Defenders

Bruno Saltor Grau (Almeria): The Barcelona born right-back came up with a solid display against the flank-swapping duo of Reyes and Simao, helping Almeria keep Atletico Madrid from scoring.

Iago Bouzon (Recreativo Huelva): The 24-year-old put in a commanting display against the red hot Dady as Recre fought out a narrow win over Osasuna - their first in a long time.

Mario Alvarez (Getafe): He was shipped off by Frank Rijkaard, who did not believe he had the positional sense to contain the best in the business. Consistency has admittedly been a problem for him, but when he gets it right, he certainly can deal with the best. Well, ask Henry!

Lucas Licht (Getafe): "Messi who?" read a banner at the Coliseum de Alfonso Perez on Saturday night. Might have been a touch overdone, but demonstrated in two words just the display Licht had put in.

Midfielders

Ariel Ibagaza (Real Mallorca): Was running the show for Mallorca and making the Real Madrid back line look very ordinary. Did not deserve to end up on the losing side.

Marcos Senna (Villarreal): The under-rated midfielder broke Sevilla's resistance almost single-handedly. Free-kicks, passes, tackles, Manolo Jimenez's boys simply had no answers to his display.

Robinho (Real Madrid): Undoubtedly the display of the week. The Brazilian continues to prove that he has added consistency and effectiveness to that bag full of tricks that he brings with him onto the pitch. Ripped through Mallorca every time he had the ball.

Forwards

David Villa (Valencia): The prolific front man has had a quiet one month by his standards, but was back to his best as Ronald Koeman notched up his first win as Valencia coach. Two more goals for the 'out of form' striker, who has managed seven already!

Guille Franco (Villarreal): The Mexican played the perfect number nine against Sevilla, who, for once, had no answer to his aerial presence and movement. Two goals to inspire a 3-2 win!

Mariano Pavone (Real Betis): The Argentine came on with Cuper headed for yet another defeat - and perhaps even the sack - and turned the game on it's head. Two goals to grab the strugglers a vital win over Zaragoza. One wonders why he has been sitting on the bench while Betis languish in 19th place.

.......................Toño

Bruno Bouzon Mario Licht

....Ibagaza .... Senna .... Robinho

.... Villa ...... Franco ..... Pavone

Honourable Mentions

Getafe striker Uche is the first who deserves mention, missing out despite an inspired display to make Barcelona look very uncomfortable, softening them up for his teammates to exploit.

Real Mallorca's Fernando Varela was equally impressive, if not more against Real Madrid, particularly with his stunning second goal. He did not deserve to end up on the losing side, and neither did Sevilla's Luis Fabiano, who overshadowed Frederic Kanoute once again.

Other strikers who did well were Raul (Real Madrid), Manu del Moral (Getafe) and Congo's Mohammed Tchite (Racing).

When you talk midfield, you have to talk Valencia. David Albelda, Ruben Baraja and David Silva all responded to Koeman's call. Almeria's Felipe Melo and Albert Crusat did well against Maxi, Cleber and Maniche, while Jonathan Sesma was once again Valladolid's best against Levante.

At the back, Ivan Helguera (Valencia), Daniel Diaz (Getafe) and Juanito (Real Betis) all impressed.

La Liga Team Of The Week: Round 13

Goalkeeper

German Lux (Real Mallorca): The talented Argentine has been filling in for the injured Moya, and turned in a five-star performance to deny the likes of Frédéric Kanouté and Luis Fabiano.

Defenders

Pablo Pinillos (Racing Santanter): The 34-year-old was on the money against Vicente, even when David Silva drifted to the left to try to 'double-team' him.

Ezequiel Garay (Racing Santander): Stood firm amid Valencia's onslaught to guide his team to a famous home win. The question is; how much longer is he going to be at Racing?

César Arzo (Real Murcia): The 21-year-old former Villarreal man had a good game against Real Madrid despite his team conceding an early goal. Raúl and Ruud Van Nistelrooy both looked off colour.

Éric Abidal (Barcelona): The Frenchman had yet another solid game on the left, helping his midfielders and centre-halves, and also making a few menacing runs up the left.

Midfielders

Valdo (Espanyol): Motivation was never going to be an issue as he took on former team Osasuna. A quality display on the right, and a goal that turned out to be the matchwinner.

Maxi Rodríguez (Atlético de Madrid): Atleti's captain courageous led from the front in every way, bailing his defenders out with two quality goals and a superb all-round display as Los Colchoneros edged a seven-goal thriller.

Borja Valero (Real Mallorca): Few teams manage to out-muscle Sevilla in the middle of the pitch, but that is exactly what the 23-year-old Madrid born midfielder achieved. Blanked Seydou Keita out of the game.

Mustapha Riga (Levante): Undoubtedly the display of the week from the Ghanaian, as he rallied rock bottom Levante to a 4-3 win over Real Betis with an inspired display - which included two goals.

Jonas Gutiérrez (Real Mallorca): The talented midfielder missed the Real Madrid game after falling out with the club - over a move to the Premiership - but came back in style to inspire Mallorca with his imagination. Sevilla simply had no answer.

Forwards

Lionel Messi (Barcelona): The Argentine was back to his very best, running the show from start to finish as Barcelona picked up a comfortable win against Recreativo. What is more, with Ronaldinho out, he seemed to move even more freely.

Honourable Mentions

In attack, Alvaro Negredo (Almería) did well against Villarreal, as did Nihat Kahveci in the same game. Barcelona's Thierry Henry also put in a mobile performance in the absence of Ronaldinho.

Iker Casillas saved Real Madrid from what could have been a defeat in Murcia, while in defence, Gabriel Milito (Barcelona) and Sergio Ballesteros (Real Mallorca) were both unlucky to miss out.

In midfield, there were quite a few impressibe displays. Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona), Fernando Varela and Ariel Ibagaza (Real Mallorca), Jorge Lopez and Gonzalo Colsa (Racing), Francisco Sousa (Getafe), Guardado (Deportivo) and Abel (Real Murcia) all deserve a mention.
